To Need or Not to Need!
okay some of this is confusing to me..i need some clairification....why would i need parts from an 02 si if I"m doing a k20a2 from a type s? or parts from a 92-95 civic for that matter? then there's the section of parts they say you need but you don't? i love this DIY thread, but its just a tad confusing...I wish someone would copy and paste exactly what I need for my k20a2 swap! on top of that i can't find anyone near me that will do it! I live in Asheville, N.C so if anyone is close and knows of a good mechanic i'm all ears...and as far as the F-Con Pro V, would that be a better choice than the wiring harnesses listed here? thanx for all the help anyone can give...I guess i'll go ahead and say...FLAME ON
Parts needed:
Complete k20 motor changeover
intermediate shaft
O2sensor for the same type of motor
subframe from a rsx or 02+si
Hasport Mount Kit.. (other companies make em to)
Hasport Wire Harness Conversion (I wont be using this, i will attpemt to wire it myself)
Parts needed from an RSX:
shifter cables
headers and downpipe
throttle cable (you can use a 92-95 single cam civic cable, much cheaper and easier to find)
clutch lines from master to slave cylinder
high pressure power steering hose
power steering return line
Parts needed from an 02+ civic si:
ac line from compressor to condenser (if you want ac)
axles
radiator and fans (RSX will fit but need trimming, not very much i might add)
upper and lower radiator hoses
Other stuff you will need:
custom ac line from compressor to condensor (again if you want ac)
92-95 power steering resevoir with bracket (they do sell aftermarket ones which work just as good, especially if you want looks too)
Parts they say you need but dont need to get:
rsx shifter assembly (your stock one works fine)
fuel line
brake booster line
purge line
90 accord negative battery
custom hood latch
Here is what it costs me to get the parts. It may vary from state to state and different areas so keep this in mind that this is general pricing:
Here is the pricing of the parts i paid for everything. All these parts were new from the dealer unless otherwise stated that i got it from the junkyard
k20 intermediate shaft............................................. ...$220
Axles from 02+ si................................................ ........$100 from junkyard
RSX Subframe.......................................... ..................$600(quoted from acura) $150 from junkyard
Hasport Mounts............................................ ...............$400
Shifter Assembly.......................................... ...............$100
Shifter Cables............................................ ..................$300
02+ si radiator. i used the rsx radiator.......................$150 (TYC brand)
fans.............................................. ..................................$30 universal fan from autozone
02+ si upper radiator hose..........................................$13
02+ si lower radiator hose............................................$1 1
RSX Throttle cable............................................. .......... $40
RSX Fuel Line.............................................. .................$45
RSX Brake booster line.............................................. ..$45
RSX Purge Line.............................................. ...............$40
02+ si ac line from compressor to condensor.............$100
RSX Clutch Line From slave to master........................$20 from junkyard
RSX high pressure power steering hose.....................$240
RSX Power steering return line.....................................$50
92-95 Civic Power steering resevoir with bracket.......$50
Optional Stuff:
Hondata........................................... ................................about $900
Hasport/Hybrid Racing Engine Harness......................about $300**
(complete new harness)
**they do offer a core exchange for a different price. if i remember correctly i think it comes to $150 with core exchange. But to be safe just call and ask.
So the grand total not including the motor on just the parts needed list for the swap comes out to roughly around $3754. Plus lets say 4% tax then that comes out to roughly 3900... give or take...
Just remember that this does not include the motor... i have seen complete motors that go for as low as $2000 for the SI to as much as $5000 or more for the JDM type R...
So now when you add everything that brings it up to roughly
$5900 or possibly lower to as much as $8900 or more
Also remember that you will not need to buy everything on the list if you have read my DIY... Basically you dont need the following
Shifter assembly
Fuel Line
Purge Line
Brake Booster Line
.. thats saving you at least $130.. if you can find a 92-95 civic single cam throttle cable that would save you a few more bucks

because the RSX is not exactly the same as our civic. instead people found certain parts that fit the specs of the RSX-S engine AND our model civics. thus you need these parts even though they seem a bit out there.
like the others said... to PROPERLY fit the motor into our 7thgen civics..
lets take the shifter cable for example... using our stock shifter cables is to short becuase if you look at our motors the motor itself sits to the right of the engine bay

now if you look at the way the k20 motor is... it sits exactly opposite of the d17 that originally came with our cars

now we cant use the shifter cables from the 02-06 SI because the shifter sits up top where the radio is.. with the shifter sitting so close to the engine you already know that the shifter cables are going to be shorter..
which leaves us to the only option of using the shifter cables from the rsx which already has a similar setup to our cars and so forth... if not using the rsx imagine how much it would cost if a company like hasport or hybrid had to make custom cables.. it just aint worth it...
--------------
now lets look at something that uses a part from the SI...
if its one thing that most people who have done the swap has learned is that our engine bays are almost identical to the EP3 or civic SI as some call it... now lets look at the axles.. the axles from a rsx and the ep3 are both in the same lenght if i remember correctly... but if you take a look at the rsx type s they all have a 5-lug setup and i THINK they utilize a bigger brake setup... in doing so honda/acura has made the spline on the axle bigger(its that little pointy thingy on the axle that goes into the hub or for the people who dont know what that is.. the thing that spins with your rotors on it).. anyways the size of the hole on the hub is the same size of that as the EP3 (si) axles or the BASE rsx... the rsx type s utilizes a bigger spline on the axle..
i could go on and on but by taking a part here and part there u are at least utilizine OEM parts... by doing so you can have easy axxess to these parts from any dealer or junkyard.. if they made it all custom imagine the cost of all these parts...
as for an explnation of the parts list... hasport gives you a list of things that they say you need to get... since the swap was still new at the time i did it.. there was really no DIY or FAQs when i did it so i had to go on my own step-by-step... so i went and bought everything on that list that hasport said to get... that why i have pricing on all of them..
so what i did was break the list down into 4 sections so you know what you need and dont need.. and from what type of car to get it from...
but.. once all is said and done.. you end up with your final results....
