diverter valve

question. what is a diverter valve? what is it for and why does it sound like a blow off valve?

the reason i ask is because my friend just put one in his 1.8T passat but i dunno if it's just for the sound or if there is a hp gain or something too. he took it to a shop and they "chipped" it, put in an intake and the valve, and charged him $1k lol

DV=BOV

They call em diverters because they're usually recirculated into the intake rather than vented to the atmosphere..

lol that's what i told him but he's pretty stubborn. they didn't even put it on the dyno or anything and i have no idea what chip he's talking about.

oh and is one better than the other? does it do anything to a pretty much stock car? is it DIYable?

the quality of the "chip" depends on the tune programmed into it. Most of the more well known ones (APS, etc...) do pretty good jobs. I guess the chip job is relatively expensive, but most people I know just sent their ECUs in and it comes back a few days later done. As far as doing anything to a stock car, it changes the fuel and boost parameters, it also does a great job of heat soaking the stock IC if you beat it a lot.
I don't know what the chip job costs, I think its about 3-500, a DV depending on who makes it is 1-200 for a decient one and an intake is maybe 200. I don't know if a G is too bad, but it sure sounds like a lot.
