building up the d17 vtec..
building up the d17 vtec..
okay, so bolt-ons.. def. dont do much for teh civic as we all know.. but, i wanna know what all goes into "building" a motor up, as in,, if i took it to a shop and said, okay, make my motor better, what can they all do? camshaft, camgears, but what else? and how much will it run me up? and is it worth it?
Once boosted now i-VTEC

I just got my civic, and I was also thinking about modding it... but I just scrapped the idea of modding that engine, and saving for something big after the warranty is over (K20a3, yummy). I would suggest doing work to the suspension, I'm having alot of fun with twisties after I lowered my car, while still using the stock engine. Just my opinion though!

that's either a REALLY REALLY cheap K20A2 or a REALLY REALLY expensive K20A3 ...
A3 engine swaps go for about $1500-2000 ... A2 swaps go for about $3500

theres a lot that goes into building a motor. I am currently building my D17A1 motor. Should be assembled here within the next week. Then in the car within the month.
First off, you have to buy the parts.
pistons
rods
piston rings
wristpins (usually come with the pistons)
sleeves
cam
valve springs
valve spring retainers
main journal bearings
thrust washers
rod bearings
oil pump
water pump
timing belt
rear main seal
oil pan gasket
water pump gasket
oil pump gasket
cam seals
valve cover gasket
head gasket
intake manifold gasket
exhaust manifold gasket
head studs
Then you have to pay for the labor for.....
removal of the motor
disassembly of the motor
flywheel balancing
crank balancing
cylinder hoaning
block decking
knotching cylinder walls to clear rods
milling pistons to fit rods
micropolishing the crank
clearancing bearings
assembly of the short block
disassembly of the cylinder head
Porting the cylinder head
valve job
lapping the valves
assembly of the cylinder head
assembly of the long block
installation of the motor
after all of this, i can guarantee you that with a good tune my motor will be just as reliable as a K20 swap. Its just mine will be made for boost and putting out more way power and torque than any stock K20
