generic boost question
well, because no one else answered it... i'll answer it as best as i know...
if you have a bov with a spring that is too hard (say 10psi) but your only running like 6 or 7 psi then its harder for the bov to open up all the way, therefore you'd get compressor surge
dont quote me, i might be wrong... one of the performance shops told me that on his car, he had a 10psi spring and 7 psi spring in his hks ssq bov and he was only running 7psi so he couldn't blow off any air and he just got compressor surge...

there wouldn't be any significant damage to the turbo itself but you will run into performance problems... if the bov spring is too tight it will surge just like aellerman said... this will cause the turbine wheel to slow down, stop, or even go in the opposite direction... if the spring is too lose, the charge pipe won't be able to hold boost after the excess air is blown off and the car will fall on it's face and the turbo will have to respool again...

Ask guy again if it was the turbocharger or the engine that got damaged.
With bad BOV turbo wont damage, with bad BOV engine can be damged
So far I'm
But on the other note, if the damage got fixed, then you should be ok
May be it was replaced with BIGGER turbo!

im not certain that a motor can be damaged by a bad bov....
the BOV prevents compressor surge, which stops the compressor wheel (when its spinning at 80,000+ RPM). This can eventually cause damage to the bearings.
If the stock BOV was stuck open, it can cause the turbo to overspin also causing the bearings to get shot. Since the bov is stuck open, the air recirculates from the pressure pipes back into the intake pipe. Since the turbo is trying to make boost (but with the BOV open it cant), it will keep trying to spin faster and faster until it shells itself.
It is possible that the BOV was stuck open.
