Stafford Downpipe cracked! need help
ok guys so ive had a exhaust leak for a while but never really could fix it, thought it was coming from where the downpipe bolts to the exhaust. but today i noticed a crack in the side of my turbo downpipe! its not on any welds, just right on the side, and then upon further inspection, i found a major crack on the rear of the downpipe facing the block!!!!!!
so 2 cracks in my downpipe, neither are on the welds, and im blowing exhaust all over my engine. im gonna take it apart monday but i believe the pipe is cast iron, and i believe that cannot be welded. any suggestions would help.
i tried to take pics.....
in this one #1 is the small crack of the 2 on the side of the downpipe. and #2 is exhaust blown on my block for some time now, dammit!

i tried to get the huge crack in the back..

if it was welded to the plate, im sure it can be welded shut..that is not cast iron. Otherwise get a new weld plate/flange-ma-doo and have a GOOD shop make you a replica.

one from another manufacturer wont fit. you have to remember that each manifold is different. Each downpipe is made specific to each system. He can either weld that one up, or he can have a custom one built.
That flange is nothing but a mercedes housing thats been cut down on a chop saw. Its a very easy part to find. Look on ebay, they have them on there quite a bit. There are only 2 major styles of that part, Ford and mercedes.

turboengnr - exactly what type of metal is the downpipe, and what type of welding would be best to fix that crack?
and if i cant fix it, what type of metal would be best to create a new downpipe??
thanks man

it is a mild steel (non aluminized). Tig welding is by far the strongest weld when done correctly.
If you were to make a new one, i would build it out of stainless. But then you need a TIG welder with a purge kit in order to correctly weld it. If you dont have access to that, use some Aluminized tubing.
My new downpipe is mandrel 4" aluminized. It should work well.

When i was installing my kit, i broke off a exhaust bolt in the downpipe. I took off the downpipe and had to cut off the nut that SF welded on the downpipe cuz i couldn't drill out the busted bolt. My dad stick welded another nut on and it as been fine ever since.
