HG problem possibly?
So I was driving on the freeway and my car started heating up for no reason. I wasnt boosting at the time. I shut the a/c off and it cooled back down. Eventually it was fine, so I tried the a/c again, it was fine for a while, than it heated to twice the normal temp from what the gauge looked like. I got to my destination like 2 minutes later with the a/c off, and it cooled down a little. When I stopped, it heated up very fast to 3/4 on the gauge. Usually its at 1/4 or a little above. I turned the car off, and pulled the eBrake down to shut it off (it already cooled for like 40 seconds with the key in). I looked under the hood, and a lot more coolant had sprayed than ever before. Mostly near the bottom end of the car. I am wondering if I blew a HG? My ex was looking for smoke, she saw none. I am also curious as to if I coulda F'ed up my radiator ior something. My coolant resorvoir was way above max. But when it cools down Im not sure how much will be in there. I know a lot sprayed out the top when I was boosting. That doesnt bother me. I was driving for like 2.5 hrs straight for work. It was also a very hot day. Could that have been why? Most of it was freeway driving.
Any suggestions would be great, Thanks.
A new HG is all good, it may just be that. Car still sounds/drives fine, just like normal. The a/c messes with the vacuum and idle all the time though when its on.

if coolant was blowing back in your reserve tank, then yes.........you prolly have a leaky HG.
Welcome to the boosted family.........although, i am still on my stock HG after 1 yr

OK...........boosting & a/c on are ASKING for trouble.
Not to mention....chances are that nice long thruway run at a decent speed of 70PMH the small turbo was creating small amounts boost and holding it constantly. That ALSO probably contributed to it as well.

That's no NECESARILY true, if it was properly setup he should be able to handle small amounts of boost for a long time...

Let's keep facts and professional recommendations away from opinions and blind foresight here.

Well if his cooling system was properly setup he can keep this to a minimum. He could invest in a better fan setup and a better radiator. =) I'm merely trying to help and point out that that wasen't an "end all" answer. There are MANY other things besides what you pointed out. No harm.

so what would be the minimum things you should do to your internals when boosting?? Just getting forged pistons and better head gasket or is there some more. I'm not talkin for high boost just for 6-8 psi. and for people like me who don't want to run the 6-8psi on a completely stock motor. Did my question make sense??

Just so you know, I am tuned. They got a few pulls, and put tuned it to a 12:1 ratio. When I am on the freeway, I drive so it isnt under boost. It does still get boost every time I go up a hill and whatnot. I had too much coolant in the resorvoir as well, so that is a good reason for it to spray out when it expands.
And I dont drive with my a/c on while I boost 99% of the time. When the kids are in the car, i use a/c, and when my ex is in there. She was too hot, so I turned it on for her. It will also be 120 degrees in about a month here, so I will be using a/c some.
I have never heard of not using a/c while boosting. It does make shifting suck, so I dont like to boost with it on anyways. It drives and idles much nicer with it off.
My car also has 95000 miles on it, so I DO have wear on my parts. You need to figure stuff out before flaming, Dezod.
So I AM tuned, have worn parts, and drive with a/c off 99% of the time. My car drove very nicely today. I need to clean up my engine bay and see if the coolant is still spraying. It usually only happens when there is too much coolant in there, and I am boosting hard.

My T3 when I had it, I did 70MPH and I was holding 1-2 PSI the whole time.

Mine doesnt hold boost the whole time. I can drive not under boost on the freeway. Its around -8hg, so there is some added pressure in there. But not at 0psi yet. Going up a hill on the freeway makes it spool up a little bit though every time. I was driving for a good few hours. I wasnt driving it too hard either. I should look into something to cool the car a little better. I am trying to get caught up on my finances, and I may be moving out in a couple weeks. I chose terrible timing to boost my car. Hopefully in the next month everything will be nice and reliable. new clutch, another tune since its getting hot, eManage, and a new fuel system. Than Ill try to cool the car down some more.
Thanks for the input, sorry if I was a d**k.
Peace

I was tuned by Superior Racing Development (SRD). They tune w/a wideband on a dynojet I believe. They do quite a good job. They told me I need to get the eManage or EMS for timing. I cant do anything with timing for now, since TSI's ICU sucks. I was told not to boost more than 5 psi without retarding it properly. I will read up on the a/c and boost thing. I would like to know what it causes to happen with the a/c on. I feel a complete difference having it on and boosting, and I never liked the feeling. So I keep it off, I sweat my *** off all the time. The only time its on is when its very very hot and I have kids or my ex/girl in the car.
d00d, same thing happend to me... when a/c on... my TEMP didnt go up.... but Idling did change. It got rough......
anyhow good luck with this d00d, hopefully you wont end up like me.....
*(Believe it or not)* I am a bit happy it kinda happend to me, cuz trust me, i knw what your going trough... Right now believe it! I knw you wish your were stock........
Boosting is beutifull and nice to drive. But the type of car that we have (well I had), Wasnt all the way tested for turbo... trial and error happens a lot......
I wish my car was here with me right now, but the way that car was going.. was just a waste of money and time.... Thank Goodness Insuranced coverd the whole thing.. and now i am riding big in a new truck with 22's and no worries about check engine lights going off and smoke comming out the exahust..F*** all that... I am going to get me an old CRX and trick that up.. that way i dont have to worry about if it breaks or not.... *itll just be my Toy car in the garage*

It does sound like the HG ... Just my opinion, but go with a new Nippon leakless and get the ARP headstuds ... I have no idea if they're better than the stock ones ( have been told they r MUCH better), but I know that I haven't had any issue with overheating since I made the switch ... And I beat my car regularly with a 75 shot ...

Whats crazy, is I can boost like 8lbs, and it wont heat up any more than normal temps. But if I am driving for over an hour and a half, it will heat up fast even on idle with a/c off. It happened to me on saturday too. But it all went back to normal. I turned the car off, ate me a snobiz (bombest snow cones in the world), relaxed, and turned it on. It was still hot, so I opened the hood for a few minutes, and turned it on. It was back at normal fast. I started driving, and it heated up when not in gear. So I put it in first, reved it a little (not boosting, riding my clutch, hehe) and it cooled down to normal. I drove home a mile away (luckily I wasnt 25 miles away like I was 30 minutes previously) and was fine. I drove it for a few minutes yesterday, and it was fine. It was fine this morning, except it said it was boosting 10psi, and wasnt. Im guessing a boost leak, but could be wrong. Ill check that out. It could been my imagination that 3rd wasnt pulling that hard. After that it drove/boosted fine. I hit 1psi and it pulled good.
This is all just a headache to check my engine constantly, keep f'in with the wiring, cars overheating, have to set my ICU every time, this all sucks.
I love driving my car, but its gonna be gone soon I think. After a month or two of boosting, its pissin me off too much. Ill probably just part out the turbo, and swap, or get a new factory turbo'd awd car. Im thinking of getting an EVO or STi. not too sure which one yet. probaby the EVO, I see a lot less of them around. But I would like to keep my vic as well. Im stuck on what to do.

Yeah, you need to get the eManage. The TSI kit without it sux. I wasn't even willing to try it out. Would rather start with eManage and spend the extra cash. Sux about the a/c thing. I live in Texas. It will top 100 a lot this summer. a/c is a must. Guess I'll just have to find out.
I'm putting on a manual boost controller too (car stil in the shop getting boosted). Wonder if I turn the boost controller all the way down when I want to run a/c. Can I even do that? Anyone know if it would work?

you will still be boosting the wastegate settings. it wont do anything. Mine is all the way down, so I boost what the wastegate is set at.
I need a/c too, it will top 100 daily here, usually 104-110 I believe. I will need a/c. My car has been shutting off on me, Im ready to sell this biyatch. Almost time for an EVO. Ill make my car run good, sell everything as one, or keep it, and also get an EVO.
