K20 Pickings...
okay.. besides the obvious k20a, k20a2, and k20a3 how do you tell what kind of head you got on the motor and tranny... my friend bought a k20.. the engine code says k20a but it looks like it has a k20a2 head with a k20a3 intake manifold.... and they say its a 6 speed tranny with lsd... so how do i tell if the head is a A, A2 or A3 and how do i tell if the tranny if a 5, 6 or 6 speed with lsd..????
another thing i found out
okay someone correct me if i am wrong.. there are 3 types of type R motors based on my research...
The Japan DC5
The Japan EP3
The UK DC5
they all have the k20A engine code on there but in addition to that the other code is all different... in japan the DC5 type r has PRC on the motor and the EP3 type r has PRD on the motor and in the UK the K20a there has PRA... if this is true then here is a set of questions
1. whats the difference between the 3 (if any) and is all three really type R?
2. whats the engine code of the USDM type s... i know it will say k20a2 but what is the other code say.. PR_?
edit:
based on some research i found out and not sure if its true or not on the tranny but if its a 6speed it will have the code of either NPR3 or Y2M3 and the 5 speed will have W2M5...
now i still need to find out about the others??? anyone??

just look at it this way...if it has a red valve cover and is from japan, its the k20 you want. it will have the 220hp with the 6spd lsd. now there is one other k20 that I've heard spoken of that doesn't have a letter. its just referred to as the k20 type R. it has 250hp stock. I could have gotten the complete swap with the 250hp k20 for $6200. but there was no way in hell I would pay $6200 for a new motor when my current one isn't out of warranty yet. maybe when the motor breaks I will. and by that time, the k20 swaps will be cheaper.

250? I doubt it dude...
the only "K20a" you don't want is the euro CTR and Aus DC5R ... those are both K20a2's
actually I don't know if the Aus k20a is really a k20a2 ... but that's what I'm guessing

yeah people can swap valve covers. so if you're looking at a motor, i wouldn't assume it's a k20a buy the red cover alone. esp. if the other parts maybe be swapped. what ecu does it use? where does it redline?
hmm ok where to start
the head is identical to a type s which is stamped PRB
the intake manifold is stamped PRC
as for the tranny get down on your knees and look at where the axles go and if u can see striagh through and if u can COnGRADULATIONs you are the owner of a lsd tranny
the difference between a type s head and r head are the springs and cams but the casting is the same.
for the block as well. the difference is the alluminum oil pan and the rods inside.
???????
