Dammit - I think all of this turbo fun is destroying my transmission...
I had the car up on jack stands tonight to check out another issue I am having (idle related) - figured I'd check out the clicking I hear when I accelerate / decelerate.
Well - started the car up, put it in gear and let it idle with the wheels spinning - besides being dangerous, it was probably dumb as I was the only one there - if something would have happened I could have died.
But anyways - on to the real reason why I'm writing this...
When the car was in gear, I heard a nice knocking sound coming from my transmission. It wasn't extremely loud - which is why I don't think I would hear it on the road (especially due to road noise!)... It only does it in gear (any gear), and not in neutral, which means its not the clutch.
I wonder what it could be??? Something's definitely not right though - you just don't hear a normal tranny making noises like that when its in gear!
I guess its time to start looking for another transmission...
This sucks - especially since its a b!tch to take it out!!!

I can still drive it, but man - this sort of thing ends up costing a lot for a shop to change out - which sucks because I know how to do it, its just that I don't have a fricken lift, which you need.

I'm guessing you dropped the subframe too? What a bitch of a job....
I don't have the MAP sensor data off of the top of my head.

Man, dropping the subframe and pulling the tranny was really easy. I had never done any work on cars of that magnitude and was nervous; but it was so simple that it's not even funny. I had an extra set of hands (which I highly recommend). It seems like it would have been harder to not drop the subframe.

Yea, it was easy to take the tranny apart to change the clutch - but I never dropped the sub-frame. How did you support it??

I had the car on stands, pulled the subframe with the help of my friend (It's a little heavy), put a block of wood on my jack and supported the engine, unbolted the tranny from the engine, removed the tranny mount, and pulled that bitch out.

i'll just go ahead and throw it out, but possibly worn pilot bearing? Or throw out bearing? How many miles are on the trans?
I'm trying to be optomistic for ya!
Even if it was just one of those bearings, might as well just get a new tranny since you'd have to unbolt the trans again

I was just thinking of getting a new one from car-part.com....but I would want it to be from a 2003 or newer, since the damn older ones had problems with the syncrhos or other issues.....

I don't know what your situation is with down time on your car but I think you should at least pull the current tranny and trouble-shoot it before you buy a new one. It may end up being something simple.

Here's what I was thinking of getting....
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33731
As far as troubleshooting it - it may be too much money anyhow - since the 2001 series inherently had problems anyhow....

Whining? Yup, it's going. Could be a month, could be a day.
Sucks. Sorry to hear it. Hope everything works out for ya.....

I don't launch the car hard - I did take it to the track 1 time. I am not going to say that I don't beat on it, most of the time I just downshift into third on the highway to pass, which could have contributed to it.
Looking at the helm manual this morning with a clear mind, I can see that its most likely either my differential, or my countershaft.
The only way to verify is to spin the wheels by hand (both wheels) so that the differential turns inside. If I hear a grinding noise, I'll know its something connected to those....
I MAY just drop an EX tranny in, because I want the shorter gearing - faster acceleration! I just wish that I could find a newer one for cheap - so far cheapest 03 I could find in FL was around $450....
im no mechanic but i dont think your turbo is the cause because i just recently started to hear the same exact clicking and whining noise that you described and im not even turbod, only have 40000 on the car, will be taking it to honda soon, my car is still under warrenty. i will let you know what happens as soon as i find out.

Two of those mounts are on the subframe, so to pull the frame you must pull those mounts first.
Well Opto, I hope whatever happens it all works out for you.

There's an Ebay store called TuningDepot (It might be hyphenated) that sells OBX parts. I bought a some bullshit from them about a year ago and decided it wasn't going to work for me. I E-mailed them and they gave me a full refund with no questions asked. Great customer service.
yep, mine went...honda trannys dont like torque im guessing. First on mine, the clutch was slipping so i knew that was going then the whining sound you're talking about, anything i was at idle in 1st or accelerating. And my synchros on 2nd and 5th were basically gone to hell. I got an 02 LX tranny from a local scrap yard w/ 14K miles for 400

some one on here pulled the tranny through the top. I also did it that way. you just have to wiggle it and pull your battary. It can be done.
