Turbo Cold Engine Start

for the turbo people, when u first start your car, and the engine is cold, how long do u wait till u drive. Would u ever just start the car and drive it cold and just make sure u dunt hit boost till engine warms up? cus id figure the engine heat would make the oil hotter... thinner.. easier to flow to the turbo.

I give it about a min or two. The heat from the turbo heats the oil up just fine. its not as important on a ball bearing turbo as it is on a floating shaft.

in the winter it is different for me, but for you in Tx.........just give it a couple min. Then when you start driving, take it easy and keep the rpms down and try to stay out of boost until the engine reaches its normal operating temp.

I always at least let the car sit for a minute. It takes on average of about 50 secs for oil to circulate and lubricate the moving parts of an engine. When its REALLY COLD, i'll let the car sit for 2-3 minutes (probably excess, but i'm paranoid) til i take off. If i'm in an absolute hurry, i'll wake about 30 secs then take off and stay out of boost until the car reaches normal operating temp.

2K1Civic17"Gabe is an unknown quantity at this point
so, did you get a kit kalligarri? What one if so? is it installed yet, or are you just curious. But yeahh, Im gonna let my car sit for a minute or two if its not at normal driving temps. If I turn the car on and its still warm from the last time, I probably wouldnt wait too long. Ill let you know in a day or two. I need to get some pics up as well. I can take pics of all the crappy parts of the installation, but it was pretty normal kit installation stuff. Not too bad at all. Dont be scared of the TSI kit anybody.

It does not take 50 sec. to lube the engine. it only takes a few sec. at the most. if it took 50 sec. to lube all the engine parts, we'd have a lot of problems with knocking rods and clicking cams. Look at changing your oil, it chatters for a sec or two and then goes back to running smooth. I've worked on cars for about 6 years and never heard knocking for more than a couple seconds after starting unless there is already something wrong.

complete engine lubrication is almost instant(as in no more than 3 sec). Now if your oil pump is crap, that's another problem. when you first start in the morning, oil pressure is about 60psi. I don't think oil at 60psi would take too long to go through the small oil jackets....do you?
