turbo question
turbo question
hey my friend with a 2000EX civic got a greddy 19T turbo kit put into his car, with an intercooler. and at his rmps go up like crazy at high rmps, however, the car itself does not feel like it is going really fast.. definately faster, but not like crazy fast. it is set on 6psi. Is it just because theres not a lot of power added, or do turbo cars just not feel as fast as they really are? i dont think traction is a issue... because he its a little turbo on stock psi, t hanks guys

I would look into fuel and ignition tuning. That may be the issue you are having. I installed a 3" turbo back on mine and it helped my +6000rpm power band, but the fuel tuning will make a world of a difference. I dropped .3 sec off my quarter mile time just from pulling the fuel back 5%.

he got a new clutch not too long ago, and the turbo is tuned with e manage. I guess the kit just doesn't put how much power since the turbo is small. He doesn't have new spark plugs though, maybe that would help as madwheel said with ignition?

Hmmmm. 6 PSI is not a lot of power, but enough to notice anywhere from 50-100 extra HP. The car is not going to break out into 12's or 11's on 6PSI. I just drove in my buddy's 13PSI Civic Hatch, and that was quick. Good for low 12's, MAYBE 11's. VERY nice set-up. Was the car dyno tuned? What's the base HP prior to turbo (any prior mods)? Possibly too much pressure loss through size of I/C? Could be ignition. Could be running too rich. Too low of compression. Way too many possibilites.
its a stock d16 with the full greddy kit and greddy evo exhaust. The car was tune thru emanage, not dyno tuned though. I think the greddy kit just doesn't put out a lot of power...

TRY DYNO TUNING THEN RE-EVALUATING IT.
It is absolutely amazing how many people pump BUCHO bucks into a turbo kit, then don't do the most essential component of it all....TUNING!
That's like changing your oil and not replacing the filter.
Tuning is like the turbo god's blessing onto happy, more reliable & stable performance.

dude DYNO IT lol why doesnt anyone follow through with this. Time after time I hear about so many let downs, blown engines, horror stories, etc. etc. It is SOOOOOOO critical. You may get another 15 or 20 WHP just from a tune with a turbo kit. N/A I got 7 more WHP from the dyno with an emanage. Its not a big deal to go to the dyno. If you find someone that has one and you get cool with them you can prolly get a hook up and not spend much money. Me and my boy just took his car and for $85 we got 8 pulls. Thats a damn good deal but even if its more than that, how much is an engine. How much is it worth to put out the full potential of the car. How much does it suck to know that you only lost a race by .3 seconds cause ur car isnt tuned. just my thoughts on this topic what do I know lol

but the biggest mistake done is driving the car hard untuned!!!
I think the car needs new clutch... and or needs oil change, transmission oil change, new air filter etc. etc. little stuff like that that makes a whole lot of difference on performance...
just my .05

Still, Tuning should always be figured into a mod like that no matter what. you could split the cost of a wideband o2 sensor between some friends and that would help quite a bit. Its not a dyno but its better than tuning by ear.
well the closest dyno to me is in Portland which is a 3-4 hour drive. I am going to break my turbo in and make sure everything is running good before i take a damn trip there.
