When is it too much power???

Well I just read an article in sport compact car that got me thinking. On the cover of the mag is the HAsport K20'ed EK, turbocharged with 455 whp. Yes the max horsepower # is impressive but his 1/4 mile time I thought was a joke. On high boost (like 20psi) he ran a 13.o flat, that was thier best time. The trap was good at 117 but the 13 flat is not impressive at all. I have seen cars with less horsepower in the same chassis run better times than that. The car has limited slip great suspension and I think it even had some sort of traction control (can't really remember, article isn't in front of me now).

A few pages in front of that was a like a 92-95 coupe with not as good power #'s and that thing was running 11's all day.

I mean wasn't catalyst running like mid low 13's with a Turbo D17 with not even close to that kind of power.

Whats your take on this

This is hard to comment on without actually seeing the 13 second pass in person. With that amount of power I'm sure traction was a huge issue.

Traction was a huge issue, they said when they punched it in third the tires spun like hell, I even think they said they spun in 4th.

Heh, just imagine the times if they could get traction. This is exciting. Props to Hasport for pushing the limits

I totally agree. Personally I wouldn't know what to do with anything more than 300-350whp on a FWD car. It just becomes undrivable on the street.

You can never have too much power. That ek is getting a custom manifold done at full-race. Briang said they're going for 650 on 28-30lbs of boost. For them to run 13@117, they must have been on street tires. I run 13.00@113 on my 17" rims with azenis. With that trap its definitely an 11 sec car.

I had the chance to drive that car when it was getting tuned. It was lightning fast and traction was non-existant. It had traction control and it helped alot but without some way to put the power down, it would just burn the tires off anytime you got on it, even in 3rd gear. It was great!

You would think that with 450hp they would have run the thing with slicks....

I think that if your building a street car that 400 hp just isn't fun. you goin thru traffic and all can't really safley push your car as hard as you want, traction issues. I like to think 300whp is ideal for me. enough to lay down alot of whoopings on the street but still reasonable.

300-350maybe? for a streetable car is a nice number if you are running light weight rims ie <20lbs, but if you run some fatty 18's or even dare I say it 19's then you can run 400+ hp on the street as still have a good time...The scary limit is when you start talking 550-600 and I don't care if it is AWD that is when a car starts to get scary...fun as hell if you can keep it under you, but man is it easy to break it loose.

it all depends on what kind of racing ur doing

drag-what ever u can get it up to

road racing- 200 to 300 is perfect in my opinion, its all about balance

autoX- high response with a linear powerband

If the guy is spinning 3rd and 4th, he is most likely on street tires. I'm sure he would be in a lot lower times if he was using slicks.

btw, The guy might not be the greatest drag racer. Even if you have money for all kinds of stuff, it doesnt make you the best.
