Red face D17 Haters

First off, do whatever you want to your car, don't do what i'm about to do.

With that said, I was at work today, and I got yelled at for telling a few buddies of mine that I was gonna fully build and turbo my D17 non-vtec "power-plant". They said all the usual stuff you hear, it still won't be fast, yadda this, yadda that.. Then the SOB crossed the line when he said no matter what you do to that car, he'll outrun it.

SO.. after much thought and dedicated agony on the internet, I decided to go K24/K20a --> and probably a custom turbo kit. Yes it will be fully built, and yes everything will be perfect, because I'm cleaning out my garage this week and im going to turn it into the Frankenstein Garage.

This means, i'm going to do all this to prove a point to him, that I will do whatever it takes to out run him, in his damn GTP with all his blower pulleys and bs.

This may be the biggest mistake of my life , but this may be the best thing i've ever embarked on.

So the list right now is...

K24 block --> Fully Built --> 1500?
K20a head --> Fully Built --> 2000?
K20a ECU --> Hondata Flash --> ???? (8500 rpm redline..yumm)
K20a tranny --> 6 Speed manual --> ???? (LSD?)
Custom Turbo --> 4000??
K20a axles.. or K24 axles.. dunno how that will work (I'm not a suspension king)

Again everything has a question mark.. I'm about to search for everything (post before search to all you haters )

Sorry for the long post, needed to vent somewehre, best place available..

If anyone knows anything about all that stuff that I have question marks by it, please feel free to add.

Definately.. I know a person who has the same thing done, except in a 2000 civic si.. b20/vtec swap, and he can push 500.. I'd like to beat him at the track

you could probably beat him with just a SF dual stage turbo with H2O/ETOH injection.

You are gonna have to rethink your prices there a bit I think.
Cheapest I found a K24 complete motor for was $750. You want the complete motor for the hybrid swap, trust me.
Pistons and rods alone are gonna bring you up another $1100. I dont know how much you want to continue from there, but if you want the big numbers you are gonna wants sleeves, head studs, head gasket, crank, etc.
Then a K20A head fully build for $2000? No. First, its going to be hard finding just a K20A head in the states. You are going to probably have to import one. Expect to pay around $2000 just for the head. Then you are going to want it fully build right? Cams, valve springs, retainers, valves, etc. Thats probably gonna set you back another few grand right there. Then you are gonna want the Hondata K-pro, thats $1000. LSD is gonna be manditory, thats another $1000, plus while youa re in there, and since you are going turbo you are going to want a clutch $400. Mounts will probably be $600ish, axles, subframe, shift linkage, shifter assembly add on probably another $700. You are going to need to keep this monster on a leash with good cooling, so a good radiator will probably run you around $400. Then all of your turbo stuff which can really range in price. But a proper setup with all the gauges, wastegate, BOV, intercooler, downpipe, etc probably around $4K. Then tuning, tuning, tuning.
I hope that you do this. It would be a killer project, I just hope you realize what you are getting into. Its not going to be cheap. Esspecially if you have someone do all of this for you, labor is going to be steap.

Thanks for the info cambo, no, I haven't checked the more torque thread, i'll have to look at that. Thanks man.

I dunno about the stage 4 spider... isn't that like a drag only kit.. I want my car to still be streetable on 8 or 13 psi.. with 20 and 25 lbs settings for the ol' track.. (with slicks of course)

then go with a stage 2 kit from cn.. most people on clubrsx with it are running 15-18 lbs daily with no problems and on a k20a2 are making 350hp.... comes with new rods and pistons but not sleeves

As dumb as this makes me sound, yes I'm going to set myself back that much to prove it..

I'm also doing it to prove to myself, I can take on and accomplish something of this caliber, and put it on the street for people to admire.

More about spending money.. The way I look at it.. is this is my first REAL hobby.. So I don't mind dropping money into it, like nothing. I enjoy doing stuff to my car, I enjoy playing with my car.. So why not take it to the next level and try to make it the best on the road..


People already look at the front in their rearview mirror when they are pulling hard on me.. It's time they see my rear lip (which btw is a very nice rear lip at that)... while i'm pulling hard on them

yes people give me hella crap becaues i have a d17, they are like why are you puting money into it never goiing to be fast and a lot of outher stuff like that i said guys you are going to regret saying that becaues soon im going to get a turbo or do the swap and ill see whos going to be talking crap now.

please know what u are talking about before u post... hondata,chip,vafc... do u even know what hondata is.. or even what a vafc is? 100 people on this site say they will swap but do u know how many do it? about 5.. and how many out of those go full on modding it? 2.... and by how u are talking u are one of those 95 that wont do the swap.. gosh i could go on forever about this but im sick of stupid people

Man just build your D17...a fully built 25+psi motor has not been done on this site...find you a junkyard motor for about 300 bucks and build that thing from the ground up along with your drivetrain. And boost, i'm sure you'll still beat him. If hes talking **** about a D17 show him what a D17 can do, its so great having a 1.7L 4 banger beat up on other cars....but whatever you decide to do good luck with it!! And when you do beat him rub in it his face that you still get 20+mpg

Man good luck with the project seriously, but the dude was dawging on the D17 engine, not the vic, by swapping your taking out the civic and now its basically a monster Type S/TSX. Hes still right when he said the D17 wont come anywhere close to being fast compared to other motors. So yeah your proving somethin but dont do it to prove to him, do it cause its gonna be badass!!!! haha cause it is!!

He was ******* the car.. he said no matter what i do to the car it'll never be as fast as his.

Plus before I wanted to go turbo, I wanted to do the frankenstein swap just so I could say i have a "frankenstein" car.. lol, i just think it sounds cool.. It's proving a point to him and to myself, and I think i'd like it better than a built d17 anyways.

Someone on this site said something to the effect of, do it right the first time, even if it costs a little extra money.. That's what I'm doing to a extent, i suppose..

umm swapping will negate the whole D17 argument. thats just proving its slow by using another motor. If you want to defend the d17, then its all NA/FI on the D17, not the k20.

Yeah i understand what you mean man, seriously its going to be a project and i would love to do that if i had the money

I was just under the impression that he was dawging on the engine, which he has a right to (other then the boosted). I was just thinking that you swapping it out would prove that he was right, but if hes talkin trash about the car hes got somethin else commin, not only will you look badass, you'll fly!!!
