Turbo'd Civic Resale Value?

Now that my turbo Civic project has completed and the car is running great, I'm thinking of selling it and moving on to bigger and better things, and a new project. Not for sure yet, but it has crossed my mind. If I don't sell it, I'll end up investing another $3500 for standalone engine management. The e-Manage is as good as it gets for piggyback, but I believe that standalone EMS is the only way to get that perfect tune -- as perfect as the rest of the car ;-)

I'm thinking of selling it privately for $16500 -- do you think that is too high?

It's a 2002 model with only 12500 miles. Here are some details:

o Custom design, fabrication, and installation by qualified/proven rally-car builder, Davesport L.L.C. (more information here: http://www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/dav...urbocivic.html)
o Mitsubishi TD05H-16G turbocharger (oil and water-cooled)
o Custom log-style turbo manifold (ceramic coated)
o Spearco 18"x6"x2.75" top-to-bottom front-mounted intercooler (Griffen core)
o Custom intake piping featuring TiG welded mandrel bends and powder coated
o Custom 3” downpipe with high-flow CAT and stainless steel braided flex pipe (replaces stock exhaust system all the way from turbo to GReddy exhaust)
o 370cc R/C Engineering injectors on a high-flow custom billet aluminum fuel rail
o 1st generation DSM blow-off valve
o GReddy EVO CAT-back exhaust system
o Flex-A-Lite super thin dual fans
o GReddy stainless steel oil catch can (for boost-compatible PCV system)
o Custom stainless steel turbo/manifold heat shield
o GReddy e-Manage piggy-back controller (with all optional harnesses + tuning software and cable) hidden in glove compartment
o GReddy Profec B electronic boost controller hidden in center console compartment
o SPA Technique dual digital gauge (boost + EGT) molded into gauge cluster visor
o Autometer A/F gauge
o Only top quality fittings and fasteners
o Heavy duty piping couplings and stainless steel T-bolt clamps all around
o K&N cone air filter
o Heat wrapped A/C lines and O2 housing

I'm thinking there isn't much of a market for modified cars. I went to a dealership who crapped all over the mods and offered very low trade-in value.

Do you think that $16500 is feasible? Also, any recommendations for where best to do a private sale of a modified car (eBay, AutoTrader, etc.)?

also, how much HP are you putting out and how much psi are you running?

Manifold looks weird? It's log style -- nothing weird about it.

The car dyno'd at 177WHP at 6.5psi with a fat tune and conservative timing.

If I decide to keep it (and get standalone EMS), I'll lean it out and re-tune at 8psi.

200WHP should be no problem.

now that i see the veloz badge, it's probably not as hard as 16.5k USD

try ebay...i think i saw a turbo Si with a lot of miles sell for like 13,000, but its going to be hard to get what you put into it back...luckily your car has a lot less miles than a lot of 02's but then again 99% of people who buy a civic dont want it because its fast

It seems that general consensus is that you can get KBB + 25% of the cost of your upgrade parts.

So you lose 75% of you parts and of course any labor charges you may have paid.

Even then, I think it would be a hard sell because most people don't want to buy modified cars, and for those that would, they'd most likely build them themselves instead.

Hmmmm... tough sell for sure.

It'd probably be easier to part out the car. You may get 50% of the price for your mods, plus regular price for the car, as opposed to KBB price + 25%.

I'll never understand why people sell their car after putting so much time and effort getting it perfect. You've got a great car. But if you want to get any money, find a private party buyer that's willing to pay more for the extra mods.

Ya, it's even hard for me to understand why I want to sell it. I guess I'm just bored and want to start a new project, but can't afford it without selling the Civic.

I agree that I would probably make more by parting it out and selling it as stock, but that's easier said than done for me. I've cut parts to make things fit, I've destroyed parts (like the stock fuel rail and stock downpipe) trying to make them playball but ending up making custom ones from scratch, I've cut wires (e-Manage, fans, etc.)... etc., etc.

When you go full custom, you end up making all sorts of irreversible changes (moreso than you would with a bolt-on kit).

I'd imagine I'd have to spend a couple thousand to return it to stock. Then I'd have to take the time to sell the parts individually.

At the end of the day, I'm not sure how much better off it would be.

Guess I'll try e-Bay and Autotrader.

I have a black GrillCraft lower front grille that hides the intercooler very nicely. As you've probably noticed, I like to keep all of the accessories hidden -- sleeper-ish.

So, I do have pics of the front of the car, but you can't see the IC.

try and sell it to a teenager. I've noticed at my school so many people rather buy a car that "hot" and already modded than buy something stock and do it themselves...i think its dumb but thats how a lot are. But then again..you have a fast sleeper car, if you had a system and an overly exaggerated body kit it would sell fast to kid with his mommies money

I am looking into selling my turboed Civ too- looked up the KBB and it was disappointing. Trade in a little over $9k, private party a little over $10K and suggested ret over $12k. I have an 01 with 30,000 miles and it does seem that just putting a sign in your car or posting on ebay and waiting to see what happens is the best option.
I am sick of the car made of zip ties too, we have had to cut, glue and zip tie at least 1/2 of the car for all of this and after my whole head p and p prob I am looking to a new Accord.

selling a custom ride aint easy, my advise, Put it on every web forum you find, auto trader, ebay (with a reserve), some how spread the word through high schools (flyers or what ever), newspaper, try and get featured in a magazine (next to impossible), car shows, local hang outs and drive the thing around. (free advertiseing). youll most likly find a buyer at a car show or cruise night, since people there are deffintly intreasted in custom rides (since there at a show) get a fore sale sign for it, maybe even a vynle (sp) sticker...

thats what i do to sell custom rides after im done with em... takes a while but it works eventually

ya the new accords are nice v6 240 hp, how would a turbod vic @ 9 psi put up against one of those things? Id imagine theyd be quite heavy?

Not to change the subject too much but a guy we know has one, put on an intake and used premium gas and dynoed at 218hp- not bad so I think it could hold its own against a turboed Civic (at least mine since it is all f&*^ed up). So dragin, what do you think is a good asking price? I put $15K on the for sale sign.....

You have a few options that come to my mind right away.
1) Keep the car, and enjoy. You do have a great car there, just have fun with your boost, get the AEM EMS, tune and boost some more. That might help your thirst for excitement.

2) Pull everything out of the engine bay, and sell it all. Then use some of the money you got for that, and put a stock motor back in there and return it all back to stock, and then sell the car.

3) Pull everything out of the engine bay, and sell it all. Go out, and buy a K series, and do the swap and be very happy with true VTEC. At least, it put a smile on my face whenever I hit VTEC, and saw my tach needle drive way into the red going to 8000rpms. I dont know if you get that same joy out of your turboed civic, if you do, and you still want more...you have a problem.

4) Just try and sell it as is, and take a hit. You might be very luck, and find that one enthusiast, that sees the work, and money put into it, and will pay you, your $16.5K. Its doubtfull. Best place for that to happen is at a car show or on EBay.
