Project2k2 is on a distinguished road
I am thinking that the Apex-i is the best, it's the one I have on my car. As for no filter, I was thinking about that until I thought about what would happen if a peice of rubber shot up into it? Not a good idea to me.

You can cover the compressor inlet with some steel mesh. Problem solved.

one has to be careful about the filter being too long and hitting the battery casing and not fitting

He said... "for track use".

Hence the reason I said for "A" run down the track, but not leaving it on for daily driving.

Has anyone tried one of these? http://www.itgairfilters.com/philosophy.asp

I had it in one my previous cars, works great, sounds greats and is water proof as well. Overall great product in my opinion!
