Question Flame away

For starters, yes I did a search and no clear answers could be found.

I have seen people take a Non-VTEC engine and make it have VTEC with a head swap.
I have heard of ppl using a B16 head on a D16 block to obtain DOHC so in therory...
would a B17 head fit our motors? There were a few post where someone said they were going to do the head swap yet no one said if it would or would not work...

If so, what all would be required besides the head for a fitment on a D17 already equiped with VTEC? Solenoids, Head, Cams, ECU?

Just curious if it would work...so like the title says flame away...you know you want to.

it is possible to take a d16 or d17 vtec head (EX model) and put it on its respective non-vtec (LX,DX) block.

but it isnt possible to take a b16 head and put it on a d16 block. The bolts do not line up at all.

I wouldnt recommend the headswap, but if you did do it, i know you would need the ecu from the vtec motor, but im not 100% sure what else you'd need.

So what your saying is...that a B17 head will not fit a D17block?

no, it would be like trying to fit a b16 head on a d16 block. the vtec head swap you are thinking of, is the b18a/b -> b18c(x) or h23a -> h22a(x), and now recently the k20a3 -> k20a2 head swap. those work because they are in the same series and are physically very similar.

Honda Chevy.... I'm not sure if you understand, but....the "b" and "d" in B17 and d17 are merely an indicator of the "series" of the motor. The 17 in that code merely stands for the displacement (i.e. 1.7 liters). Just because there's a 17 in there doesn't mean they're similar.

SpdRcrChk,

Thank you for the information, yes I am aware what the letters and numbers stand for in the engine codes of each motor. I just did not know if the bolt patterns where the head mounts to the block were similar and would allow for the swap of an SOHC head to DOHC cam. But once again thank you for the information.

P.S. not new to building cars just imports...specifically the 7th generation civic.

Gotcha. I noticed you had mentioned you were pretty much just new the the import scene. If only it were so easy to just to swap.

But generally, for future reference, I believe it pretty much boils down to things w/in series can be swapped. (i.e. b18, b20, b16 are all interchangeable, k20, k24 are interchangeable). I wouldn't however go as far as saying the D16 and D17 are interchangeable. Although i could be wrong?

I thought there wasnt a B17...... as many ppl mentioned before, for just swapping heads, just like Civics in the past, cant swap a SOHC head for a DOHC, only SOHC-SOHC. Just out of curiousity, swapping a SOHC VTEC head into the non VTEC would not make the crank output to 127, is that right? But I feel doing all that may not be a great solution for power.... I heard the $$ is high.

Yeah there actually was a B17 and I believe it came in the old model integras. I'm not sure. But I know a B17 did exist.

Select older Integras, 90-92, did indeed have a B17 DOHC VTEC engine in them.

your an idiot. the only engine that that the same code was the zc engine which at first was a dual than single.

most of you guys are right dohc heads cannot go on sohc blocks and vice versa. but i know of a h22 head on a f22. which had a lot of customizing done to the head and block in order to mate the two.

What about a d16 head to the crappy d17, that'd be a lil nicer I think....get rid of the gay manifold....anemic head ports etc etc

Nom i dont think they'd bolt up. You can always just take headgaskets and compare if you're doubtful.

I have the Edelbrock Wet NOS kit #71002 in my car, 2003 LX and its nice power boost for sure, i took off that dumb *** WOT swith and replaced it with the handy push button bc i didnt wanna be sprayin in 1st gear off the line. I also would like to say i picked it up brand new for $550. I'd like some help with the jetting though bc the damn thing only came with jets for 60hp. Id like to get it to jet 75hp, but i cant find a jetting table/diagram anywhere so i can buy the new jets. If someone can point me in the direction it would be a BIG help.

You might wanna just call up the manufacturer and ask them what size jets to use, or which are compatible.
