valve timing

hey guys,

I'm preparing for a head swap compliments of DH racing.com. I need to be educated on valve timing for our sohc engines. Since intake and exhaust lobes are on the same cam how are you supposed to set the timing? I have heard that adjustable cam gears on sohc engines are not as beneficial as on a dohc. Also that adjusting valve timing on a sohc is almost the same as adjusting the ignition timing. Ignition timing can not be adjusted on our cars so this might be a good thing. Advancing the valve timing is good for an all motor set up in the low rpm range and retarding the timing is better for NOS set ups and for more hp at the higher rpm range. Can anyone verify if any of this is true or correct me on any of this if am wrong? I'm expecting to be making all the major purchases in January 04. Does anyone know if there is anyone else on the web offering good things for our cars in this department besides DH racing? looking for possible better pricing...

with a sohc all of the individual "exhaust and intake" overlap adjusting is done on the cam itself, by the person doing the regrind. that is the only way to do it. and of course the total advance and retard would be done by a cam gear. Most reground cams need to be properly adjusted via the cam gear, on a dyno to get the "right" time and make the most power for your application..drag, road race, street ect.
What you said about the effects of advancing and retarding the valve timing are correct.
DH seems to be the place for custom work porting ect. You may try crower for a cam grind, but the price DH is asking for custom work on our cars is fair, when you think of the amount of work and talent involved in doing it right.

Since you are getting the head package from Dhracing, just ask Dave what you think you should do.

I tried contacting the site with a couple of questions concerning product info and pricing. I did get one response back from Josh which still left me somewhat unclear. They're either too busy or dont want to talk to me until I'm ready to buy which is understandable, but this actually is a serious inquiry and I'm just trying to gain some extra knowledge so i'll be able to make best decisions when January comes.
