Thumbs down Houston roads SUCK!

I have been working in Houston for about 6 months now - I thought that the roads were crap when I got here (how hard is it to get concrete FLAT and SMOOTH anyhow?!), but now that I have my car lowered they are just BRUTAL! I've never been anywhere (oh wait - NYC) where there are so many godd@mn potholes, divits, and just plain rough roads in my life!

On top of that - downtown is CONSTANTLY under construction - it never ends, sort of like being in the twilite zone.......

So if you have an inkling to visit houston - DON'T, its just not worth it.....

NYC roads suck, lucky the civic never saw those, only the Galant I rented for a trip to Jersey when I lived up there. I'm suprised I didn't blow a tire or a strut on that car. The moving truck wasn't much better, and it's those potholes I blame for the things that got broken on that trip.

Try living in Boston MA, downtown Boston has been under construction for 15 years!!
the Big Dig only about 2-3 more years left... so they say
plus the roads in general suck all throughout Mass anyhow, thanks to the wonderful winters

I've been in Houston for about 3 years now, and fortunately I had enough good sense to keep my ride height stock... I still can't figure out why anybody would be stupid enough to lower their car and get a kit here.

Doesn't compare to boston, we got the shaft over here, houston doesn't even get snow, picture houston roads but with shitty winters = more potholes

LoL

I fear the drop because of this particular reason. On my way to school, I bent one of my old rims because some suv forced me into a patch of potholes while cutting me off. I only like to travel the same roads/routes because at least I can expect where the potholes are and avoid them.

The worst for me is on the highway that I take going to my campus. There is this dip that streches across the entire highway. Of course, it's a little bit passed the peak of the hill where no on can see it. And being that there's a hill before it. Many drivers speed up to get up the hill quicker, and once at that top they meet the dip.

I used to scrape that black rubber guard underneath the bumper, before I lost it in the snow last winter. Now with 18s, they scrape the front fender wells. I tested what speeds is best to approach the dip for a whole week, and found that 30 mph doesn't scrape. It's scary as hell when you're slowing down to 30mph but everyone else is accelarating to 50-60mph because of the hill.

I gotta take pictures of some of the craziest potholes in my area for you guys to see

Well I don't know where you guys live in Houston but where I live its just fine. Every city is going to have their share of bad roads, except New Orleans which I heard is the absolute worst. I live on the NW of Houston and the roads are fairly smooth. I think Dallas is one city though that has good roads in general.

Ha - you must live either in the Galleria area or Westheimer (where all of the ritzy people live). Of course THEY have no problems with potholes or crummy roads there (rich people would have nothing of it!).

But seriously - almost everywhere I go the roads just plain suck. Its funny - cuz I am originally from WI, and moved to FL two years ago. WI mostly uses concrete due to the fact that the ground will freeze, asphalt would crack over a shorter period of time. FL uses mostly asphalt, since its much smoother - but is susceptable to cracking. Both can get it flat as glass, which is wierd, since about 80% of the concrete in houston is wavey. The contracts must have went to the lowest bidder or something......

Yeah the roads in downtown Houston really blow. Construction has been going on for the past 4-5 years with no end in sight. I drive downtown a lot every single time I go out to a bar or a club, and I had to raise my car up 1.5" just to avoid bottoming out every Fri and Sat night.

Note to visitors: do not take Milam Street. The raised manhole covers and blocks will tear your car up.

For the most part, the Houston freeways are nice and smooth. The freeways on the east side of town - I-10 and the East Loop near Pasadena, Baytown can be a little rough though.

Actually it's kind of ironic - the roads in the River Oaks area are pretty bad (not as bad as downtown though). Ever driven on Kirby south of the 59 freeway (River Oaks area)? You'd think that an area of town where every other person drives an SL-500 could afford to have some decent roads.

My older sister lives around that area (West U), and I had to drive over to her house a few times while my strut was blown. HOLY **** it was like I was driving a go-kart - I was bouncing around everywhere.

Houston roads have been the suckiest roads I have ever driven on. And they just get worse when you get farther from downtown. I lived in Dayton where the potholes are literally holes the size of a family. People would take pictures of their family in the potholes to send to the county for them to fix it but they just get the same rock that washes away after the first drop of rain. I need to find those pics that were in the news paper.

Yeah, but it never finishes. I mean, you start something to improve it. Its almost like the city is continually pouring money into looking better, only to never look better.....Wheras, pasadena (which is where I am staying) just pretty much does nothing to fix their roads. Wait, actually they DO attempt to put a half *** patch of asphalt in sometimes, but they don't even do THAT right - its just sort of shoveled in and backed over with a dump truck a few times. Give it a day or two of people hammering it and it'll be back to normal within no time....(normal as in holier than christ himself!)

For the most part, the Houston freeways are nice and smooth.
As long as you usually stay on the freeways, it's not that hard to take. I seriously feel sorry for people who work downtown though. I can only imagine having to deal with those streets day after day after day, especially if you're in a lowered car. Every time I go down there, I try to drive as slow and careful as possible. But somehow some way, a SUV or truck would be behind me. I betcha anything they're thinking, "Move B*tch!" Ha!

Damn it sucks but the roads are not bad where I live only in Downtown really. I drive on the freeways everday all over Houston I just know where all the damn potholes are at. When u see me driving u just see me swirving and changing lanes all the time avoiding pothoes.
