Thought segregation was in the past? think again...
i just found this interesting...
Prom
basically a school in georgia is having a white-only prom. when i first saw the title of the article i thought oh you can only wear white but i read the title again and i was just in disbelief..
ya i know racism still goes on today but never knew it would go as far as having seperate events for blacks/whites. i mean wtf, come on its 2003... it just shows we still have a long way till everyone is treated equally. i'm sure alot of us have lived in LA so we dont really have a big issue with racism but if you go out to other small cities... its a different story...
i remember when i went up north to washington state, i hardly ever saw any other race other then white. majority of the people up there were friendly but there were a few openly racist people out there...
i dunno i just thought i'd like to share it with ya'll...

You obviously have not been to the South...racism is still blatant.
And LA has a horrible race relations problem (people just choose to ignore it)...remember the riots... I don't think people really got mad becuase they wanted to defend Rodney King, they were mad because they identified with how he was treated.
I can give you some stories about negative racially motivated situations that I have encountered in LA...and it is not just white people I am talking about...actually many different ethnicities and races.

Rep Power: 317 SUcks, thats all i have to say. We dont really see racism as that big of a problem here in souther californai because we're pretty diverse but then again, there are some parts where it can get really bad.
I personally see no problem with it. I've heard of Black only and asian only events and nobody made a big deal about it. The second white people want an event to themselves everyone gets all pissy about it...
I don't persoanlly agree with it but I also don't see why there should be a problem with it. What really bugs me are the blacks that thinks that after over a hundred and twenty years that they still feel that they are persecuted just becasue they are black. Not that it doesn't happen but why is it whenever a cop pulls a black man over for speeding the first thing otu of his mouth "It is because I'm black isn't it?"
Thats about as stupid as it gets....If I were a cop I'd pistol whip him and cuff him because he's so stupid he's a danger to himself and others, then say, "No ******** I pulled you over for speeding!"
Not to say there aren't people out there that wont pull others over just because of their color, but it is stupid that they assume that nevertheless.
My ex's uncle is a cop and he said he'd get the "African American" officers in there laughing because when they pulled over someone of color they'd get that statement then laugh and write them up.
I mean if I turned to a white cop and said you pulled me over because I'm white I'd look pretty stupid!

Rep Power: 417 you see nothing wrong with it???? its prom, yes its privately funded but still. it's something that has NOTHING to do with where your from.
you see black or asian ONLY events? i cant think of ONE event where its strictly ONLY black or ONLY asian. yes it might be held by asians and majority of the people there are asian BUT its not restricted to JUST asians. and ya its PROM, its something for school not for culture. I'm not saying any race specific event is ok but i dont think its right especially since its for school.
i'm sure most of the high schools people went to had some sort of african american club, or korean club, etc... but NEVER did they say it was restricted to black or koreans.
n hmmm.. maybe i can put this is a way you can relate to it... you drive a fixed up car, cop pulls you over. often times our initial reaction is, its cause we drive fixed up cars. i mean YES they might have pulled us over for speeding BUT if it was a stock car, chances of getting pulled over is less likely... same with the whole 'you pulled me over cause i'm black thing'. i dont even know who says that now-a-days but i'm assuming there still are a few people who think like that. but ya its the same as us who drive fixed up cars.. fact is chances of getting pulled over is greater.

Like I said I see no problem with it, but I also don't agree with it...I'm all for celebrating your heretage, hell I'd be ashamed to be japanese and not celebrate my ethnicity, or Chinese...I say that because people can see how culturally strong they are and how they do their damndest to keep their heritage alive. There may be other reasons for having an all white only prom, then again it could be just the total hatred for any other race...but having an event where only certain peoples are allowed is acceptable especially when privatly funded...
I'm not trying to put down any other race, color, creed, etc. ebcause I do believe that all people are created equally and their behavior from there allows me to determine their importanc ein the world which I live in. are they law abiding, do they decieve people to get what they want etc....
There is a controversy surrounding the sport of gold...the masters will only allow men to play in their tourniment, a woman want in but they say no...years before that club used to only allow WHITE MEN on their fields...now Tiger Woods is allowed to play, hopefully soon women will be allowed to play also.....
Certain awards shows honor only certain races.... We have the awards for the blacks and the awards for the hispanics..cant remember the official names...only people allowed to be awarded are Blacks or hispanics of any type of entertainment....Ok lets have an awards show where ONLY WHITES can get an award...oh people will be up in arms about that one....and the country music awards don't count......
So we have awards for certain types of entertainment where any race can win...then we have awards shows geared towards people of certain ethnicity where only that type of person can be given an award....I'm seeign this prom as an invite only type of thing, only people with white skin can be allowed...the more I really think about it the more I dislike the idea but still given the area I have no personal problem with it...
