or you don't wanna buy online?
Just throwing my advice, only buy Maxtor or Western Digital harddrives. I'd recommend ATA133 and 7200rpm so you can transfer it to your next pc.

Seagate - Only Barracudas are good. Performance is not TOP, but harddrives are reliable.
Maxtor - Extremely reliable nowadays. Also quiet...
WD - Top Dog. Reliable, quiet, and proven performance.
IBM - There are some models that cannot take excessive usage (10 hours/day). I think the name of the model was "star" something...
Reliable? Yes... Pricey? Hell yea....
Fujitsu - No way. Too slow and bulky.
Samsung - Good in memory, but not very popular for harddrives. Avoid
Hitachi - Decent stuff. Performance compares to generic drives....not impressive overall.
Toshiba - Same as Fujitsu. Avoid.
I've been working with harddrives for the past 4-5 years and I can only recommend #1 Western Digital #2 Maxtor.
Reliable, cheap, excellent performance, and lowest failure rate.
k, going back to my paper...

Buy Seagate or Western Digital. How old is your computer because if it is really old your computer might not tak a 40 gig hard drive. Or you can partition it to hell to make it work. I think they still have 20 gig hd around somewhere. Just go to fry's and check them ut. Usually they have the cheapest stuff.
About buying computer stuff online. I don't think that is cool because say the hd is crap then it is going to take you longer to get exchange because you have to ship it back and all that crap.
"Just throwing my advice, only buy Maxtor or Western Digital harddrives. I'd recommend ATA133 and 7200rpm so you can transfer it to your next pc. " Once again a computer that only has a 4 gig hd might not support a 7200 rpm hd. If it does though and you are going to get WD then get the special edition hd that has 8 meg cache.
Sorry for being a computer nerd just my .02

dont you only have to partition it depending on the OS? i know with windows 95 i had to.

You can partition it however you want to. You can partition a hard drive to make tow hard drive. One partition for your programs while the other partition for all your other crap. I had a pentium 200 mhz and I could not put a 40 gig hd and I was screwed with making myself a brand new setup just so I didn't waste my money on my hd. Try it and see if you can put in a 40 gig. Each motherboard supports different stuff. If worse comes to worse just return it

ATA133 7200rpm will work with Pentium I+.
Sure the motherboard wont be able to take full advantage of the technology and performance, but it will work fine without partition. The motherboard will not have problems recognizing the harddrive size.
I forgot to talk about compatibility. Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, and IBM are the most compatible. Send me your old 4gb! I want it to backup stuff...

I wouldnt use it as a slave drive...In fact i wouldn't even use it with the new drive.
It will slow down your system overall and it might not be compatible with the new harddrive. If you wanna give it a try, remember Master & Slave settings...no Cable Select.
