Rep Power: 296 2001 Honda and Accord Air bag recall
hey guys i found this link. look like there's a recall on 2001 civic and 2001 accord for defective air bags. People with these models should contact honda via the number or dealership.
Honda is recalling some of its 2001 model year Accord and Civic models due to excessively pressurized airbags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that certain airbags in the affected vehicles can deploy so violently that the inflator will rupture. When the bag is deployed, NHTSA says that metal shards from the excessive explosion could act like shrapnel, shoot through the bag and possibly injure vehicle occupants. We're no crash experts, but that sounds like it would hurt a lot.
Owners of affected 2001 Accords and Civics will be able to bring in their vehicle to their local Honda store where the inflator will be replaced free of charge. Honda hasn't yet released a notification schedule or disclosed how many of each model will be recalled, but owners can find out more info by calling Honda at 1-800-999-1009. Hit the jump to read the official NHTSA press release.

I'm flipping out. I haven't needed the airbag before but now that there could be a problem with mine and I won't be able to get it fixed for a week and a half I'm going to run into something.

Yeah, I always wear sunglasses. But since I do that the shrapnel would just cut my jugular so I'd have no use for my eyes anyways.

So I went out and checked this morning and my vin is in that range... ****. So now my airbags are disabled till this can get replaced. I rather not have one at all, then one thats going to go off and possibly kill me. No thanks.
Whats the deal with repairs- do we have to wait for a letter so we can schedule a repair, or can we just stop by and have it swapped out?

well one thing says we have to wait until we get a letter (how can we if we are second owners) while the service bulletin itself says that as long as we fall into the range we're fine. call ur local honda daelership and ask

this is pretty lame- i just got off the phone with a local honda dealership and they said they dont have the parts in yet. Plus the guy said there's no way of telling if my vehicle is affected unless I have a letter, but I said that iM looking a Service Bulletin right now and it my VIN is on there and he didnt say anything, bottom line my place doesnt have parts yet. Lame

Just unplug the SRS yellow connectors under the passenger seat and turn the car on. Then turn it off and plug it back in. When you get it fixed, they will reset it for you.
Thats how I did it, I'm pretty sure that will stop the air bag from deploying. All seat belt indicators and everything work fine. Can anyone confirm this disables the whole airbag system?

honestly i wouldn't even touch the air bag system. if the dealership notices, they might say you tampered with it and refuse to fix it. Just have the dealership fix it asap.

The rude *** guy at honda world says that current registered owners will get the letter- depending on which Vin is most likely to happen. You wont get it until maybe a few more months depending on VIN. so hopefully u should get it in the end. If not just call them up and tell them ur VIN is in the range and they should do it. But of course recall and warranty **** is always put back at the end of the line- this replacement should nto take that long. 30 minutes max. - so hopefully it'll take 6 hours total if not later

Well I got a letter in the mail for this a few weeks ago and do you think that the dealership would **** with my alarm and auto start? All the wiring for that is right under the steering column along with everything else...

Just tell them about it and tell them not to touch it. If you're worried something might go wrong, maybe take pics before you leave ur car there?

I think the only thing they touch is the airbag in the wheel.
Check your vin number on the honda owner link page. It will tell you what recalls are out for your car and which ones have been fixed.
