I got pulled over today for my Exhaust. Cop told me to pop my hood. Dumb cop ask if i modified my fuel rail VC code he gave me was 27156(B) then he put modified smog He put a white sticker on the back state referee certification required - no officer sign-off. Now i have to put my stock exhaust and header on.

what did u have on when the cop pulled you over... header,aftermaker cat, aftermarket downpipe,hks axel back...

becuase if u have a aftermarket header like dc, which is carb certified then your fine.. but back the stock cat and downpipe.. and lave your hks axelback and you wont have any probelms by the cops.. trust me,, ive been there and in the end its not work it, but youll be fine, just goto state ref, get it signed off, pay the fine, and your done...

This happened in Fountain Valley, not Garden Grove. Do you guys know anything about the appearing in court thing??? There's a court date on the ticket; does that mean he has to see the state referee, pay a fine, then go to court???

^Too late for that... if he wanted to cite him for the exhaust being loud, he would've had to put that on the ticket.

yourinmyworld, check the cited vehicle code at the dmv.ca.gov website and see what it's exactly for. I got something similar to you, if not exactly the same.

They need a CARB sticker PLACED ON everything that isn't stock but qualifies as a smog device.

I went to the referee center at GoldenWest State College, which is where you will most likely go, and the guy there told me that anything past the cat on OBD II cars isn't considered a smog device. I had my Greddy Evo2 on there and passed with flying colors... after I got the sticker on my intake and took out some extra wires...

So don't worry too much, but make sure you do everything according to their specs.

you dont really have to go back to stock.. anything with a carb sticker your safe.. and since youe going to a state ref and its for a loud exhuast not a inspection, they will only do a test to measure your exhaust noise... if you pass just show that to the judge and he will sign it off. idk if you still have to pay the fine.. but like i said.. depending what kind of header you have, if theres a carb plate on it.. and your stock cat converter is on with stock piping with a HSK axelback you will pass.... becuase i have one, and the noise level is below the legal limit!!

call the number, get a appt, get it ref'd then go to court to show it was fixed. and pay 10 $ fine.

the ref i went to in ELAC said they if something wasn't working correctly, he wouldn't do the check. the smog takes like 2 minutes

exhausts are NOT a smog violation. CARB does not issue EO numbers for exhausts ... you can check their database of CARB-legal parts if you do not believe me ... there are no EO's for exhausts.

as far as sound goes ... the cop was obviously just hassling you. If you have a silencer in there, they really don't have any reason to pull you over since it's not loud. Even if you had an aftermarket no-cat pipe, it still shouldn't be THAT loud with a silencer.

iirc, exhausts need to be 95 dbA or under from 50 feet away. If you've ever heard that, it's pretty frickin loud. [ahem, Temo?]

you can always jump the bandwagon and get an 05+ rsx-s muffler or dc5-r muffler ;P

a cop tried to pull the same thing on my wife the other day in yorba linda. she told him the mods are 50 state legal and he said "everyone thinks tint and loud stereos are legal too but they are not" i told her the next time the cop pulls her over to let me talk to him and if he wants to write a ticket to go for it, ill take it to the referee and prove it and ill file a harassment charge since i told him everything was legal after the first time he pulled over the car. i spent good money on parts to prevent this so i am not about to be pushed around because some cop has a hard on for exhaust mods!!!

well my header is not legal and i don't have a cat and i still had 3in or 2 1/2 piping and it was still lound with the Silencer. The cop new that my header was illegal. So today i just put back my stock header and exhaust. I have axel back so if no one wants my exhaust i'll just put back on. i like it nice and quiet now

another one of these...i went to the state ref before and it was no big deal. My exhaust passed the decibel test then i got my certificate saying it was legal in california. Never got another ticket since.

Yup. See, they say "exhaust," but their definition stops at the cat, whereas our definition goes all the way to the muffler tip.

I'm still looking for the legal definition somewhere, but can't find it... so you can't fight it in court, but you'll win this at the ref station when they see that you have the STOCK cat and CARB stickers for anything non-OEM.

And the ticket was already written... the loudness of your exhaust is NOT a factor, since he failed to cite you for it.

Most cops aren't very intelligent at this stuff... they use some kind of cliff notes or something, cause I got cited for something other than what he was hassling me for, so they really don't understand what they're talking about, for the most part.

Example, one of the cops that came to hassle me [yes, the cop that pulled me over called for backup ] pointed to my brake fluid container (or something random like that) and was like, "Aha! What is that, hmm??!!"





So, just put CARB stickers and the stock cat and headers and you should be okay. He won't test for sound, don't worry.

I have gone threw the same problem, i had illegal headers and intake, and i got popped, and i got a "modified smog devices" ticket, the same as you, all i did was put my stock air box and header on, i have 2 1/2" piping with some no name muffler, i just put silencer on, took it to chaffey college they looked at it, they smogged it, said it passed and i paid them and they let me go on my way, then all u do is take the paper they give u and ur ticket to the court house. u dont see a judge, just go to the window the deals with traffic and show them, they put a stamp and ur done.

FAWK, I got the same shieet. I need to see State Referee for aftermarket headers and Injen CAI. When motorcycle cop pulled over he then asked me to pop my hood. Then the pig was looking for CARB stickers on both headers and CAI. I have an HKS exhaust, I guess I will put back stock header and slap on a carb sticker on CAI. What do you guys think?? I so dont want to put back stock exhaust.
