right now it sucks. there's no snow at all.
90% of the time, you wont need chains. Last year was probably a record for snowfall and even then I only needed chains like 3 times(out of like the 20 i went up there).
big bear is full of motel/hotels/cabins. just go to www.bigbear.com, should be able to find some. one nice one is supposidely "the block", some snowboarder just opened it this year.
and snowboarding is a must when your up there.
here's some pictures from last year...

i drove up to mtn high last year after a snow storm, only time i really needed chains was getting out of a parking lot and getting near the ski resort. With chains it was easy to drive, just take it slow and try not to freeze your hands off when your putting the chains on

Mt high is ok, the best thing is just that the drive is between mountains, you never drive near a cliff so no worries there and it is the closest. When i lived in riverside, i got there in 30 minutes. and there are plenty of places to stay at any ski resort, with plenty of places to eat and rent whatever u need

the roads at bigbear are still fine..
driving in snow is no big deal.. dont stomp the gas.. if yer sliding dont touch the brakes (they just lock yer tires and turn them into skis.. even with ABS)
turn into slides
wear yer seatbelt
ive taken my vic through over a foot of snow without chains (before the drop).. its no big deal.. they keep the roads up there really nice.. just take it slow and leave lots of room between you and the guy infront of you

it doesnt really snow here like it does in canada.. it snows a few inches the most usually and its driveable since theres alot of car going up and down. my car's slammed and i take it snowboarding with me. especially right now, the roads are DRY, even the mountains are dry. Total season snowfall so far is like 2"
If you go to mt high, its only a one day trip. not much up there.
if your taking a gf, i would really recommend big bear, they have a lake and its an actual small town so it has everything you need.
here are some sites..
www.mthigh.com
www.bearmtn.com or www.snowsummit.com

i dunno, i went last year to mt high and i was sliding everywhere, it had just finished snowing and the snow was covering entire cars. Once you get going your going, its the getting started part that is hard. I had to get out of a parking lot that was at a slight slope, but i couldnt go anywhere, go a few inches and slide backI woulndt recommend going to mt high right now, all they have is man made and even show, the base is very low. That was supposed to be my gf bday and xmas present, i take her up for some snowboarding and buying the rest of her equipment since she only has a board and bindnings. I want to wait till it actuall snows. I know some people that went to mt high last week, said its decent right now, but if its for your girl, i saw wait a little
