ATTENTION: Loop-101 drivers

Valley law enforcement agencies are cracking down on drivers on Loop 101. The message is this -- if you go even 1 mile over the posted speed limit, you will be ticketed.

A stretch of Loop 101 in Scottsdale is rapidly becoming one of the most dangerous and deadly roadways in the state.

The Department of Public Safety and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office are teaming up to deal with speeders and aggressive drivers on Loop 101.

In the past six weeks, the average speed of people cited for speeding along the loop has been 84 mph, according to DPS. The highest speed was 137. The speed limit along Loop 101 is 65 mph.

Operation Maximum Impact will saturate the loop with motorcycle officers from both DPS and MCSO. Those officers are adopting a zero-tolerance policy toward speeders and aggressive drivers. The hope is to drive home one simple message: Slow down.

"These are highways. They're not speedways," said Richard Fimbres of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. "We need people to understand that. The two components you need to have a driver change his behavior is a high visibility enforcement and education."

And that's exactly what Operation Maximum Impact, which will last for about two months, is meant to do.

"We're using everything in our arsenal to attack this problem," said DPS director Roger Vanderpool.

Both DPS and MCSO are serious about Operation Maximum Impact.

In Arizona, driving 25 mph above the posted speed limit is a criminal offense, not just a civil one. Officials said if officers do catch people going 25 mph or more faster than the speed limit and all the circumstances fit, those people won't just get a ticket, they'll go to jail.

Operation Maximum Impact launches this weekend.

I think they have been doing this for a while, just not publicly. When I come to work in the morning there are usually about 4 motorcycle cops sitting under the cactus bridge.

You wouldnt think it would be worth it for them to ticket for 1mph over. There have to be a million ways to get out of that ticket. It is a waste of time and taxpayers money.

I would get out of that ticket. I dont usually go but 3 or 4 over if that, so if they ticketed me, I would fight it. Thats good though, there are some crappy drivers out there.

im pretty sure you can argue the 1mph over the speed limit. not every driver can maintain such accurate speed. assuming not all vehicles come with cruise control that is and some vehicles that have alternate sized tires as well.

1mph off...i really hope that is just a saying to scare/alert/alarm drivers and not take it serious when it comes to citations

The only reason they are cracking down..........and quadrupleing the police force, is that everybody is moving to this state. We are #1 in north america right now for people moving to. So many drivers just plain suck, especially all the damn snowbirds that think the road is frozen in 110 degree weather. They all need to get the hell outta here, well after Im done selling them houses and land. They all suck at driving, and cut people off, dont pay attention AT ALL, than the ones who speed (natives to phoenix most the time) get in trouble cuz people are getting into accidents all the time. they all suck at driving and need to regulate.
