finally raced that damn little neon
Okay... as most of you know, I've been hunting for that little Neon SRT4 that is around here. I've yet to find one at a dealership (not that i've looked that hard), but none the less this guy has one. Now you all know I'm not a fan of neons. Many people probably aren't. And as fast as the Neon SRT4 is supposed to be, I just find it hard to take serious with those wimpy bug-eyed headlights, and those like-wise tail lights. It also really carries the same body style as the regular neon, with exception of hood scoop and large spoiler. (What is the purpose of the hood scoop when it has an FMIC?) Other than that, it really just looks like a neon, which to me, has never exactly screamed performance or style. It was more like whining and saying "little girly car". IMO, I think dodge would have gotten a better reception had they come out with a different car... rather than using a current platform that really isn't looked at highly as any kind of tuner car, aimed at that demographic.
Okay, now that I'm done whining about all that.....
I have been hunting for this guy the last few days. I've seen him 3 times, but never was able to get a run. I finally find him while I'm cruising by the high school (i think he picks up his girl there), and low and behold.... he's got 2 other neons with him. One is blue, the other purple. The blue one has tint so dark, I'm sure that I can see the person inside, just as much as they can see me outside. My experience with neons also tells me that purple generally means "fat" and "chick". Upon further inspection, there is a "fat" "chick" driving the purple neon.
Again, we're around a lot of traffic, and I'm doubting we are going to get to run, AGAIN. I end up next to him at a light, but fattie and the little dark neon that could are in front of us. To my bewilderment, they race each other. It's like watching the tortoise and the.... fat tortoise. Now logical thinking would play into this matchup, but of course, the neon without the weight impairment wins.
At this point, I have the SRT4's attention. Well the kid in the visor who is driving it is watching me. I'm in a low gear, letting him hear the engine, letting him know I'm game. His fat friend moves over and he speeds up. I move in behind him, and we are FINALLY able to get ahead of traffic.
55mph roll... sh*t. That means 3rd gear... 55 is a bad spot for us S2k's. To my surprise, I pull on him, even though I'm not at an optimal RPM. I continue to pull. And pull a little more. I only get about 1.5 cars on him to 100mph or so (he did better than I thought he would) and then we hit 110mph. And then I walk him HARD. Those things lose a lot of steam around 110 or so. I probably put another 2-3 lengths on him by the time I shut down at 125 (which was already much faster than I wanted to be going). It was interesting to say the least, but they must shift or something near 110 and fall on their face in that next gear.
The neon did better than I thought, which means it's quick, to say the least. But the style really leaves a lot wanting, IMO.

You're my hero!!! I wish I could just go around racing anybody I wanted. I suggest you name this chapter "Stalker" since it seems you had been shopping around for this guy.
Pulling out my Dec '02 C&D magazine which just happens to have the S2000 and SRT-4, I see that those magazine editors managed to accelerate the Neon significantly quicker than the S2000... so from that I can only assume that driver skill played a good part in that race... good kill

Yea sure its got a turbo, lets stick one in the S2k and see where the neon stands then.....

Th way i see it is that those editors are either getting head from the execs at Dodge, or very good compensation to beef up the numbers to make a far superior vehicle look weak compared to a crap box with a turbo under the hood. The only thing they managed to accelerate is the domestic dumbass market into buying a glorified neon.

A. mag numbers mean jack squat.
B. a stock SRT4 is slower than a stock S2000. Period.
C. I will NEVER lose to a stock SRT4.
Driver's skill played nothing in this race. See point B above.
haha... yup. that neon guy also needs to read point b.
You'd have an 11 second S2000.
Ya dont even need that. Stock will do just fine.

I wasn't nervous that I'd lose. The numbers are all on my side. The only thing I get nervous about is racing on public roads.... I've always got that extra eye open for other people.

Considering that it’s brand new and the guy was racing it makes me believe two things
A) He’s a moron, which leads to the conclusion that his driving skills suck.
and
B) It was NOT properly broken in yet, which leads to the conclusion that he’s a moron (see "A").
Id like to have seen it though. Bring the camera next time.

I'm sure the car may or may not be making full power. But in all honesty, the neon will be just "slightly" slower than a Stock S2k. I've seen a buncha times on the srt forums and so far best I've seen was a 14 flat on a 2.1 60' time. I've seen a lot of low/mid 14's. but only one 14 flat and one 14.1. (on broken in and stock cars that is)
It's damn close to an S2k, that's for sure. but i think ultimately it's a bit slower in stock form. now if you can get over the looks, and the fact it's a neon.... go buy one. for 20 grand you can't get a faster car new.

I never said the outcome (well FINAL outcome) would be different, I just wouldnt pass judgement untill you have more then 1 race under your belt. Its like why I dont pay any attention to the "surveys" the news does. like 100 people really allows for diversity to take effect.
and looks are completly objective. i persoanlly dont mind it without the gay wing. But im sure I can order an SRT4 with OUT one for even less then the ones with.

A stock SRT-4 dynos at 215hp at the wheels and 245 tourqe at the wheels. This has been proven, I'm not going by mag numbers.
The numbers are not on your side. You obviously have not reseached the car much. I'm not gonna call BS on your story, but I will tell you that you would undoubtetly get your *** handed to you in a race from a roll. With equal drivers based on trap speeds that I have already witnessed with both cars, a race from a stop would be extremely close. Both cars trap about the same times, but the SRT-4 will trap a higher speed due to it having so much high-end from the turbo.

Okay... as most of you know, I've been hunting for that little Neon SRT4 that is around here. (What is the purpose of the hood scoop when it has an FMIC?)
Quote

You've been brainwashed by the function of the hood scoop on the WRX, which has it's intercooler on the top of the engine. The hood scoop forces air over the turbo, located in the back of the car as well as the intake manifold, helping to keep both of them cool. Also, the hood can be cut further to allow air to be forced over a air intake mechanism if installed later.

The other is a sport economy with a turbo van engine that costs less than $20k.
Oh and while we're at it:
Lambo Diablo > Ford Aspire
Ferrari 360 Modena > VW Beetle
and of course,
SRT-4 > 7th gen Civic.
