p'OooooooooooooooooooooooooooooWNED!
Special thanks to LA station ABC-7;
LOS ANGELES — Three deputies and three civilians were hurt on Monday in a five-vehicle crash in Hawthorne, which occurred as the deputies were en route to help colleagues chasing a carjacking suspect, authorities said.
Three patrol cars were damaged in the collision at Prairie and Rosecrans avenues, said sheriff's Deputy Sonia Parra. The other two vehicles were vans, said Los Angeles County fire Inspector Mike Brown.
Firefighters sent to the scene shortly after 10 a.m. had to use hydraulic equipment to free a seriously injured deputy, who was airlifted to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said Brown.
The seriously injured deputy's patrol car, which struck a maroon-colored van, reportedly rolled over at least twice and may have caught fire, according to witness accounts. The deputy's condition was later upgraded to fair, said Deputy Alba Yates.
Two people in one van and a third person in another van suffered minor injuries, Brown said.
The accident occurred as deputies from the Lennox Sheriff's Station "were responding to an assistance call of deputies in pursuit of a carjacking suspect," Yates said.
"While they were responding to their assistance request, they were involved in a traffic collision," Yates said.
According to Deputy David Cervantes, "... the original call came out in the city of Lawndale as a carjacking suspect that took over a vehicle from two innocent bystanders in their vehicle. They were left behind."
The crash was the third involving law enforcement officers pursuing suspects in the Southland in the past week.
From what I heard on the news, there was one office in the intersection doing a "hold" on traffic. And 2 other officers, one heading North and the other heading East, they both thought the intersection was being held for them. One by stander, a former police officer said "there was no reason for them to be traveling that fast."
