Many claim AWD is king, for assurance I'd tend to agree but if you care about weight, cost, fuel consumption, or maintainance costs...... AWD can't compete with a good set of snows on FWD, it just can't.
As for going 40 when others were going 15, Id say you were driving too fast.
AWD may seem great in the snow, but once you rotate an AWD car past 30° or so kiss it goodbye cuz theres no way out.
(edit)
also there is that whole stopping thing.........

well let say...on a snowy day would u rather be driving a AWD or RWD or FWD? its not even about stoping cars are going slow because they are skiding...but with AWD u dun skid u just keep on pushing foward..and yes u can't stop i'm not flying down the streets during rush hour...i am just saying when it snows AWD is the way to go...
well it would be had to be goin 40 when there is snow on the streets with RWD OR FWD ....AWD u get a little better pull with out the skidding

I live in the snowy northeast (near Boston, MA) and I don't have problems navigating snowy/icy roads with my FWD. I've got a good set of tires (not those crappy stock tires that will leave your wheels spinning in the mush) and they've been treating me well so far.

and for me, i perfer FWD over AWD in snow.. cuz i had a AWD SUV before my civic.. and i tend to get over confident knowing i have AWD and start goin too fast (the brake distance deal). so since i got slower than a sleepin grandma in my civic, i feel safer
