Headlight mod - I like.....

First of all, was it worth it??? I think so. Even though I took the time to clear the headlights, I ended up painting them amber anyway...what's the point?? Well, believe it or not the subtle change I made to the headlights makes a big difference to me! When orignially thinking about this mod, I was considering cutting the orange insert in half, and attaching either the upper part over the turn signal pocket, or the lower part over the reflector. I couldn't decide. I started searching for similar ideas and stumbled across MEX's mod. I really like what he did, and at the time didn't know that an Amber reflector was required in the state of Virginia. I too live in Virginia, and didn't want to have to deal with the cops/inspection. I decided to do a similar job with my reflector with the exception of painting the entire thing. I like the look of the amber leg on the bottom of the light....

Anyway, here are a couple of day shots of my headlights with the entire reflector painted transparent orange. The reflector functions perfectly! BTW, the headlights are NOT fogging up!! They are simply filthy because it was snowing and I was too lazy to clean them off before taking the pictures!! The amber bulbs will go away as soon my back ordered Titan bulbs come in!! They are similar to Sylvania Silver Vision, except they come in 7443!

Looks good. What did you use for paint? I was going to do that, but I couldn't find the right paint for the job.

Yeah, that might be the exact same thing I tried. Although I got a defective can. I know that there are two types of orange for that brand. A lighter one and a darker one. I had the lighter one last time and I think it was a little too light. I'll try to either find yours (if it's the dark one), or the dark one.

How many coats did you use BTW? Light coats?

awesome, thanks for the credit

the reason I didn't paint the entire piece amber is because i want the headlights to look cleared when looking from the front. looks sweet imo. I also have the titan bulbs on backorder, hope they come in soon. for now i've been using orange 7443s with a light silver spraypaint coating, just as effective i suppose.

also, you're in northern VA too? WHERE?

we need to meet up sometime got AIM?

Grey: I think I used two coats. Basically I just sprayed LIGHTLY until the color matched the OEM amber insert as close as possible. No real guidlines other than START LIGHTLY, MOVING QUICK! Do not keep the can still while spraying, it will get too thick REAL FAST!!

Mex: "Back in the day" I had a 1990 Ford Escort GT ! It had AMBER turn signal lenses, but I wanted clear. Mercury made the Lynx, basically a Mercury branded Escort, except it had Clear Corner lenses with Amber bulbs. I had to have them, so I put the Lynx lenses on my Escort!! I tried the silver spray paint over the amber bulb back then, and wasn't too impressed with the results. I know a lot of BMW owners are doing this, and even us CIVIC owners, but I don't think I will be happy with the results. I am getting really Fed UP with waiting for these bulbs to come in!!! Also, DUDE, I promise I have never seen your car in person, but I think we have VERY similar tastes. AFTER I ordered my UK tails, I found out you had them!! CRAZY!! One of mine came in broken though, so I haven't had a chance to put them on yet!! Been since Dec 31! . . Anyway, I am up in Loudoun County, Ashburn....AIM - No, not until I reformat this dog PC of mine!

Later!

InDashMP3: funny, i used to drive a 1991 Escort too. it was pretty crappy though. someone hit it and left no note so I bought my civic with the insurance money.

my camera makes it look pink, but it was the same red as all the others

also, be sure and check the mid-atlantic forums every so often, we have meets around here all the time, we'd love to get more members to come! we may have a DIY meet coming up pretty soon...
