No more Audi.......
No more Audi.......
I had to cancel my order for my 2003 Audi A4 1.8T.
We have a new addition to the family on its way and I need to save some money. I'm still getting rid of the vic and I need some opinions on this car that I'm thinking about getting. I need a four door now and I'm thinking about the new VW Jetta GLS 1.8T. It's really nice, roomy, comfortable, and cheap for everything that I want on it. $21,959 with all my goodies. If ya want pics of it go on www.vw.com. Let me know what you guys think.

well the jetta 1.8t is the same thing as the audi 1.8t 180hp. the audi is just the luxorious one. i would go for the jetta 1.8t, i love it. personally i would get a jetta 1.8t golf.

Is this addition yours? If so, you should rejoice in the greatness that you are bringing a new life into the world. Who cares about the car. I would give up any car in a skinny minute for all of the headaches and joys of having a baby.

Don't get the V-Dub... check out the reliability history first. It is horrible! Tons of small problems, like electrical and detailing falling off. Not only that, you are paying more for a car that is smaller than your Civic! I admit the powertrain is superb and VW/Audi's interior is second-to-none, but there are too many down sides.
In fact, every new-gen Jetta owner that I've talked to, ranging from TDI to VR6 owners, all say the same things--problems after problems.
For that much money, get yourself an Accord Coupe with the 2.4L iVTEC engine. It's more substantial, and it's brand spanking new to the market. The Jetta is long overdue and the new one is only a year away. The last thing you want to do is buy the "older" model and be humbled by the new one that costs the same price.

01 coupe is right....i love the VW style and all..but just simply toooo many problems...i know several jetta and passat owners....horrible reliability.,,,from windows not working, windshield wipers not turning off, getting lock in your own car (all true stories)...VW's are just not well built...even all the magazines agree.

my friend has a 2002 jetta vr6...he loved the car up until he sucked water in his engine with his CAI.
The dealership rebuilt the motor, but since then its been problem after problem. he has a stack of over 20 receipts from repairs since the motor was rebuilt. But before all that happened it was a great car. So lesson here, always install the air bypass valve. But to answer your question, i would go with the VW, very nice car.

Yeah, go check out Consumers Reports. Or pretty much any information centre... I believe AAA & CAA keeps records as well.
I'm using Consumers Reports because that's the last one I read.. but yes, they were marked up like crazy for electrical problems. Trust me, Volkswagons do NOT make reliable cars. Whoever said "German Engineering" equals reliability, is on crack.
Don't confuse reliability for quality or durability. Quality is the material of the dashboard, richness in leather, etc. Durability is how much physical burden it can take (will floor carpet wear out pre-maturely?). Reliability is things not breaking down, or burning out in electrical components.
And you can get yourself an Accord sedan too 170HP iVTEC.. 2.4L.. and more room than ANY Volkswagon, including Jetta's larger sibling, the Passat. Back that up with world renowned reliability, quality & durability and you have yourself a winner. Oh, and did I mention one of the highest resale value in the used car market?

i also have 2 friends with jettas and one with a beetle.
all 3 of them have had their cars in the shop at least twice during the first year of ownership, and at least twice a year after that

I've got two friends that have 02 Jetta GLS 1.8T's. One automatic, one five speed w/ sport package. The automatic non-sport one has over 20K on it already, and the 5 speed's got 14k I believe. Both have had zero problems, and have had excellent experiences at the dealership. They are not kind to their cars, either. I'd say go Jetta. If you're really worried about long term reliability, lease it.
man i agree with FlyRiceRacer02.... who gives a **** bout the car at this point man.... your having a baby. the baby and your girl should be all that matters! it would for me anyhow.... if i had a baby which expected in the near near futrue..... i'd give up everything for my family. that would be all that mattered to me..... when your child gets older then you can continue your bad *** hobby...... IMO thats how it should be. you think you'll have money to make a sleeper car and race and ****, when you just had a child...... maybe your not ready for that. not trying to flame or offend you bro, but it's life... you need to put your money where it should go FAMILY!... i could understand you wanting a new car and all but just be happy with a stock (4 door as you want) for now.
just my 2 cents.
thats how it'd be for me!
good luck with everything hope you have a beautiful heathly baby man!

My mom has an 01. There's been 2 problems with it (broken window motor, which was recalled and warranty extended to 7 years), and the abs light in the dash, which was also recalled. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.
I don't really like driving it... it's throttle by wire (as opposed to cable) and theres a delay between the pedal and the car responding, it also has a bit of numb feeling in the steering, but handles quite well. Inside, fit and finish is great, seats are on the hard side (doesn't bother me), the radio buttons are a bit small, but they're not that bad.
The interior is not very big however. The back seat has less room than a Civic, and the dash sticks out quite a bit so it intrudes if you've got long legs. The trunk is long, but not wide. Getting golf clubs in is a challenge as they do not fit in through the narrow trunk lid. They need to be wiggled in there.
There's my quick review. They are a little more expensive, but you really do get a lot of car for the money.
I sure wish my car was newer

I know many people with VWs. Everything from sciroccos to beetles to jettas to golfs to passats. And not one of them has had a problem that is out of this world. The only times I've seen problems with VWs were when I was talking to some guys at a VW meet I went to with my dad. But think about it, these are people who are constantly tearing their cars apart. Of course when you bump your turbo up three levels you can expect to have problems. Congrats on the new baby.
Heres a question... since VW and Audi are the same cars with different aesthetic finishings, why don't Audis have the same problems that VWs supposedly have?

how about a mazda protege 5 wagon for around $18k? or maybe the mazdaspeed protege sedan if you want turbo. i finally got i chance to sit in one at the autoshow not too long ago and i liked it very much. it may not be fast, but it from what i read it handles very well.

btw, the mazda 6 is on car and drivers 10 best list this year, along with the new accord, but i dont know if that means anything cause the ford focus is still on the 10 best list, even though it has had recalls and stuff.
