Just got ticket for my tints!!
Qcksilver,
When you say "request" that you roll up your windows, that means
that you don't HAVE to, right? Because a request is a lot different
from an obligation... Don't you have the right to tell the officer no
without any repercussions?

Just curious, do cops receive an extra inscentive to bust people for stupid stuff like going over the speed limit by just a little? e.g. a bigger bonus.
Harry, no, you don't have to, but there's nothing to stop the officer from writing the ticket anyway. You don't need "probable cause" to write a ticket, merely reasonable suspicion that the offense occured.
Blackavian...no. Quotas are unlawful in all states.

I got pulled over for tints once here in Wisconsin by a state trooper, I went to the station to pay the ticket, but before I did I wanted to prove a point and the point was that SUV"s and minivans..most come with tinted windows and theres no difference between their window tint and the 20% on my car, so the trooper had me pull up next to the explorer in the lot and the windows were the same and he let me go. I think cars like ours get pulled over more because they don't come with tinted windows and when we get em done, some people like the REALLY dark tints. Qck do you feel any more safe pulling over a minivan or SUV with tints then you would say a sports car or import???
Oh wow that really sucks a lot of people up here don't have tint on there front windows even when the law is 32% so Limo on my front 2 sticks out and yeah cops really stare but no issues. But yeah people have limo on the front doors here and I don't see the difference if you own a sedan and you have limo on the back doors they are just as much of a threat as the driver, I even think more. But yeah I have had 22% for a long time and no issues but the look of limo even my honda dealer loves it.
But sorry to hear of your troubles

All of those that you mention are legitimate equipment violations. The cop didn't just pull the stuff out of the sky...it's fair game if it's on the books...Cops don't make the laws, they just enforce 'em.
ok think about the safety of the cop. a person with tints the cop cant see inside the car. for all he knows someone in the car can have a gun pointed at him. would u like to be the cop that has to pull over a tinted out car late night? and dont give the comeback "yea well i dont carry a gun in the car" because the cop doesnt know that when he pulls u over. u deserved the ticket, end of story.

Man, that's dumb. I hate it when cops pull you over and just look for things to give you a ticket for. My brother used to drive an S-10 lowrider truck. He got pulled over all the time for dumb stuff like: having his windows too dark, having his license plate cover tinted, having it too low, and having his stereo too loud.
If you don't like a particular law, write to your senator, the cop has nothing to do with the creation of legislation, they are merely charged with the enforcement of it. There is nothing illegal or harassing about the enforcement of a legitimate law. I can't speak for any other departments, but I am trained on what to expect and have seen just about everything in two and a half years in a suburban New York City department. I personally have probably written about 2 or 3 tint summonses in my entire career, and like most of the tickets I've written, the motorist asked for it. I have no problem giving someone a break.
That's incorrect. New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 375 Subdivision 12-A permits for front window tinting so long as there is at least 70 percent light transmittance. The rear windows are not regulated, and would not prevent someone from having a gun, but we are trained in several different methods of conducting stops, and there are defensive standing positions that you can take while addressing the driver and/or occupants of the stopped vehicle.

i know the legal limit is 70%, which barely makes a difference. as far as you being trained in several different methods of conducting stops, and there are defensive standing positions that you can take while addressing the driver and/or occupants of the stopped vehicle. why couldnt you approach the car from the front (since the law only affects thefront two windows) ? i dont know what other peoples reasons for tinting there windows are but, one of my main concerns is to prevent a crook from seeing inside my car.
i am not trying to challenge your knowledge of these laws, obviously you would know them better being a cop. i am just trying to prove a point that i didnt have my windows tinted so i could shoot at police officers, and i doubt that anyone else on these boards would. we are just doing this for the looks or to protect our cars, whats the problem with that?

Overall, having laws against tinting is for other people's good not the drivers who gets blind by the sun yet still able to see out the windows at night.
Instead of Limo tint, why not just call it Gangster tint?

gotta love the tintlaws here in the GTA
darkest legal for the front is 35%, and anything in the back
been driving parallel with cop cars and haven't been pulled over once... just got pulled over for dirty plates, and DUI checks (only drink coffee before driving hehe)... but that's about it

though I will be respectful if pulled over.. I'd jus like to know the best route of telling the officer it is legal so I dont have to end up wasting a day of work in court fightin a ticket I shouldnt have gotten (happend to a friend of mine.. though he had a fairly souped up ride)
But im kinda with the cop on this one, if you do something knowing its illegal, don't bitch when you get busted for it. Regardless of its some BS law or not, its still a law. Being able to see a drivers face has kept me out of a few accidents. Just earlier this week i was going down the road when a minivan pulled up to the stop sign at a side road (the person in front of me had just turned so im going a little slow) but i could see that this person wasn't even looking in my direction so i don't accerlate much and like i thought the would, they just pulled out once their was a break in the oncomming traffic, it wasn't until they were in my lane did they see me. Of course i promptly gave him a finger out the sunroof. But if i couldn't have seen that he wasn't paying attention, i could be T boned him right when he pulled out.
Being able to see a drivers face can help alot. You can see if their attention is more devoted to the road or talking on the cell phone while playing with the radio. You can see if its some old lady that doesn't know whats going on and won't yeild at the next 4 way stop, or if its some teenager that thinks his car is a supercar and might try to take the next turn at 100 mph only to wipe out. You can whistle at the fine girl in the car next to you. You can see if any girls are checking out your new body kit.
Lets put it this way, would you want to be driving if EVERYONE had 5% tint all around. I sure as hell wouldn't, people are too speratic (sp?) decesions are made too fast, and the movments of the car don't always show a persons true intention. When driving on the backroads some people swing out left before making a sharp right turn so they can keep their speed through the turn. While others on backroads, if they are making a left, they get into the opposing lane about 30 feet before making the turn so they won't make everyone behind them slow down.
dude 75 dollars for one ticket? lol you should be lucky, in hawaii try 97 dollars PER window... legal is 35% all over and lets say you have a VW jetta which has 7 windows cuz the back has a little window on the side windows... anyways 97 x's 7 = 679 dollars for TINT only... lol on top of that lets say your cars is modified without a recon sticker saying your car is legal for the road... another slap of tickets etc etc etc...
i just scraped my 5% tint off cuz my friend got busted for over 900 bucks in tickets, he's gonna go court and testify on it.

Yeah, you can have a decal that says that. If the officer has reason to believe your window tints are in violation, he or she may request you to roll the window up. BUT...I usually won't care if when I approach a car all the windows are down already because it shows me that the driver is looking out for my safety, so I'll help the motorist out....most cops will do that.

vechiles are made for a purpose
Trucks are made to tow, haul and go off road. When you lower it you completely defeat that purpose as it can no longer tow, haul or go off road.
SUV's were made to haul the family and go off road. When you put 23" rim on it you completly defeat that purpose as you can't go offroad.
Economy cars are made to get great gas milage and be very safe and worry free. When you throw on a turbo, nitrious and your MOMO steering wheel. You completely deafeat that purpose as you get not so great gas milage, things are constently breaking. And your car is no longer safe.
Theres alot of things that people do thaqt just don't make sense. But i guess were all guilty of that.

i got limo all the way around, i guess i'm just asking for a ticket. if i get pulled over and ticketed, the tint will go, but i have driven past and along cops ever since i got my tint, and it doesn't seem like those cops cared much.
i know my tint isn't legal, if i get ticketed, i'll pay it and remove the tint. thats the same as if i was speeding, i know what i am doing, and i should suffer the consequences, thats all there is to it.
btw, i dont like lowered trucks either, but i dont really consider an s-10 a functional truck like a silverado or f-150, so i guess lowering it doesn't really hurt it since it probably wasn't meant to tow much any how.

A lesson that I learned is it is not where you are from, but where you are at. 20% is legal in New Mexico, but when I was driving through Arizona where the legal limit is 35%, I got a ticket. It is called quasi-_________. The cop wanted me to strip my tint infront of him with a razor blade that he had. I told him that I was 30 miles from the NM border and if would give me a break I would just pay the ticket and not contest it (which would require him to be in court). The same thing happened when I drove through VA with a radar detector.

And out here (PHX) most people dont have tint to "look cool", its because when it's 120+ outside, the interior of your vehicle goes well over 200 degrees. Now, I don't know how many of you have ever tried to drive an oven, but that's what its like out here right now. So the cops seem to be fairly lenient on tint, for the most part.
But, I think another one of the main reasons there are tint laws is because its REALLY hard to see out your windows at night when you have super dark tint. A lot of times you need to see out your side windows while driving, and having dark tint makes it a lot more dangerous to do somethings. But yeh, thats just my 2cents.

Also, if you don't abide by the law of window tinting, then that's your own fault. You deserve it. I wouldn't want to be a cop and have to pull over a tinted car and can't see the driver at night. Who knows if he's got a gun pointed at you.

you buy trucks and lower them down because it is awesome. or you could just go get your gun reack billy bob sticker and jack your truck up and be a hill billy
