I'm thinking about going without the latch when I get a CF hood and just using pins. So that's why I'm wondering. 3) Would you be able (in your opinion) to install the hood pins more towards the center, like above the very edges of the grill? Thanks.

1) No idea, its pretty light though.
2) Yes the pins are needed because after installation, the hood latch wasn't working. This wasn't because of the hood or the installation, but because after an accident the front bumper was pushed in a little, and I needed to pull it back out.
So to answer it again, the pins were needed, and the hood wasn't latching.
Now, the hood is latching and the pins are still needed.
Too many occurences I have heard where the Hood would fly off at high speeds.
3) You could do it that way, but according to the guys that installed it, the pins wouldn't be as effective.
