my build
I just decided to kinda do my own build thread.
Ive got a 2002 civic ex 5 speed. I've done a couple minor upgrades so far. Cold air intake and magnaflow cat-back exhaust, high output alternator with 2 gauge power wire and 2 gauge grounds for the battery and tranny and chassis and engine block. also full rockford fosgate sound system. The rest is looks for now. This is just some pics of my repair progress. I'm in the process of painting it now. The clear coat was peeling off in sheets. I'm going to college for my degree in Collion Repair Technology. I graduate this Christmas and my car is my grade for the summer semester. It's getting repainted back factory black with "house of kolors" ice blue pearl in the clear coat. That will give my car a black look till the sun hits it and then it will shimmer a blue color.

Re: my build
I'm letting it cure over the weekend and then ill cut and buff it tuesday morning.
She looks beautiful even now though.
Also, i completely debadged her. I welded up those two holes in the back where the Honda "H" go as well. So its a very clean look.
The tail lights I did with my own mix. I used clear coat and black base and just smoked them till i had them the darkness i desired. Same with the headlights. My clear coat is UV protected too, so my lights will never haze over.

Re: my build
Thank you. It took about 80 hours of labor on my part to do it. But it was well worth it. It's amazing how cheap it is when you do it yourself. Total cost on my paint job was $300
Here is a pic of the spoiler I painted and thought about putting it and then changed my mind.

you could NOT have made a better choice leaving that off. Good job on leaving that spoiler off

Re: my build
Im going to college to do this as a living. We spend 1 hour in the classroom learning the theory behind collision repair and then 7 hours in a live working shop. I stay extra to learn as much as i can. The other day i stayed 16 hours. (stayed for the night class i'm not even a part of.)
Because i used a black sealer, it only took one quart of black base coat to paint my entire car and then a gallon of clear for a higher gloss.
I use the colleges $50,000 paint booth which is a vacuum sealed down draft booth which also can bake cars at 185 degrees for any desired length of time. I also a Satajet 3000 base gun and Satajet 4000 clearcoat gun. Which are about $800 a piece. I wish it was all mine but i figured while i was attending this college and got to use this equipment, i would make the best of it.
The wing was given to me by my sisters fiance who had it for a integra. I loved my stock spoiler but the owner of my car before my broke both the front mounts on it and it cracked all the way down it. So i wasn't putting it back on the car. I like both looks. The clean look without a spoiler and a stock one. But imma sell this one now that its all painted and looks new to some 16 year around here and but some HR springs to drop on. Would love coilovers but thats a heavy chunk of change

Re: my build
I wet sanded them with 600 grit then 1200 grit and let them dry real good then mixed up so clear coat and put some black base in my clear and sprayed my headlights and tail lights. I sprayed it alot heavier on the tails obviously lol

Re: my build
The route I did the best way. It really doesn't diminish the output coming out of either my headlights or taillights at all. But they look black as sin till i hit the brakes or have my running lights on and then they are chrystal clear and BRIGHT.
Cost maybe $10 in materials and is the same material my car is painting with and will last the length of my paint job

Re: my build
I sold that spoiler this weekend for $200 cash. Not too bad for someone giving it to me for free. All I had to do was paint it.

Re: my build
She screams it at the top of her lungs! I want to slam her so bad.
I just haven't made up my mind as to which route I'll take.
I love the progressive comp coilovers that are about $900 but at the same time, I wonder how rough my ride will be if I just did tein lowering springs for $200.
Any tips?

Re: my build
super clean man!
hey i've done some reading up on the subject but it would be nice if you could right a DIY for automotive paint. obviously not everything you've learned at school, but the basics, like the differences in price and quality of different types of paint. it' would be really nice if you could cover a simple demo from body filling and sanding to clearcoating on a spare panel or old hood. pricing would also be nice to know for tools and resources.
the reason i ask is that i'd love to paint my car, with automotive spray guns. i know it's not easy and i've seen both ok and great finishs on DIY paint jobs.

Re: my build
Thank you sir. A clean look is what I was going for
You can spend anything you want to on paint. Just be sure it's two-stage. Meaning a base coat and a clear coat. I like the brand "Matrix". They are really fairly priced and all their paint was designed by the chemists at "PPG"
For body filler, I use "Fusion". It's only $20 a gallon and spreads and sands easier than $50 a gallon "Rage".
The grit sand paper you will need is 80, 180, 320. That will get you up to the point of primer. Once you've primed, you'll want 320 wet and 600 wet.
3m scuff pads are amazing too. You can get those in 320 grit equivalent and 600.
I would also invest in a sealer. It is a primer thinned down to almost the thickness of basecoat and incredibly useful for generally coloring the car before actually using basecoat.
I use the "Matrix" clearcoat which is called "Refinishing Solutions".
It has a great shine to it and holds it's luster for a long time.
Also for tape, I use 3M automotive laser cut. It's green.
Pricing of most of it.
You're looking at about $50 in sand paper. $20-40 in tape.
Primer is around $100 a gallon. I only needed a quart on mine.
$50 for the sealer.
$150 for base coat and reducer(silver, black, white) $300-600 for red or blue
$80-100 for the clear coat and hardener
I'll keep thinking on what else I can help you out with.
School starts back a week from monday and thats when I'll be back in the shop. I'll take some pics as I do stuff to show you what to do and how to do it.
Any other questions, just let me know
