My Carputer Install
I installed a computer into my car last month and I'm glad to be rid of the CD binder finally. There's still some things to touch up but here it is.
As I was installing everything on the bench.

The way I had it mounted before I bolted it to the trunk.

That little thing sticking out is the GPS receiver.

Isn't it a beaut?

The front end I have running on top of Windows is called Roadrunner and the skin I'm using is Steel Blues. Both can be found at www.mp3car.com. But I don't need to use Windows at all, everything is built into the frontend with all touchscreen capability. Even the volume......but sometimes out of habit, I find myself turning the fan ***** to change the volume!
Loading screen.

Menu

Here's how you choose albums.

Here's what the playlist looks like. It uses Winamp on the backend.

EVIC for all OBD interface.

Equalizer

Choosing a saved destination with the GPS. Of course you can put in destinations on the fly as well.

Smaller navigation window if you still want to see the eye candy.

And the full screen view if you need to really see where you're going. It also changes colours for nighttime view.

Touchscreen interface for creating notes.

On screen keyboard for entering webpage URL.

Bluetooth connectivity with my Blackberry.

Radar

Radio

Weather

Full weather details.

I don't have the Wi-Fi working yet so all the weather shots were stolen from another guy's thread. And the GPS screenshot is his too, although I do have GPS working now. Just didn't take a screenshot before I mounted it into the car.

Ya, I have to pull the screen out and put it in its final resting point. But I just had lasik and don't want to be in the dusty garage for a few days. I'll repost pictures when I do that.
The setup is a mini-ITX motherboard, it's real small and uses little power. It's powered by a 90 watt DC-DC smart power supply. It takes power directly from the battery, no inverter needed, and it also starts and shuts down with the ignition so I don't have a power button. And hard drive is a 2.5 inch 80 gig laptop hard drive, and 512 megabytes of Kingston DDR RAM. That's about it. A few extended VGA and USB cables, a Xenarc 7 inch touchscreen, and a Holux 213 GPS receiver. And I also installed about 200 feet of wiring.

You need the VGA output. Just prior to installing this setup, I bought a $1200 Panasonic 7001 flip out DVD player. I was pretty pissed to find out I had to turn around and sell it. But the touchscreen won't integrate with the computer and the resolution would be horrible, don't even try it. So I spent another $450 on this screen and the other one is still sitting on the floor in my bedroom. But it was worth it, I hate having to change CD. I have 2000 songs, including every one of my CD on this computer.
So if you were going to start a project like this, you'd probably have to start from scratch dude.
Ampie Case
M10000 mainboard
512 megabytes Kingston DDR RAM
80 gig Toshiba 5400 RPM hard drive
M1-ATX PSU
Holux 213 GPS receiver
200 feet of wiring
MTX 4244 amplifier
Xenarc 7 inch touchscreen
3 USB extension cables
VGA extension cable
