DIY Painted Wheels Is A Success! PICTURES!
well guys, I got tired of having silver rims cuz it was doing nothing for my scheme. So I did a little spring break project.
Materials Used:
2 cans Duplicolor Wheel Coating (Graphite)
1 can Duplicolor Clear Coat
1 can Sandable Primer
Masking Tape
Index Cards
I can't speak of the longevity of the paint because I've only had them on my car for about 3-4 days. No chips so far, and they have withstood one wash.
Before Pics of my car:
Now Painting Process:
Original Rim:
After masking off the lip with tape, then adding index cards to block the tire, this is the PRIMER phase. I was almost tempted to keep it primered
.
After Spraying 4 coats, along with 2 clear coats, this is how the rims came out.
Looked pretty darn good, but I couldn't tell exactly how well it would look until it was on the car......
So to the question, does Duplicolor wheel paint work? Yes it does. Does it last? That I cannot tell you. I can tell you I've gotten a hell of a lot of compliments from people who saw my car before. It's about a 5 hour process, between masking off the lip, indexing the tire, painting 4 coats, 2 clear coats, but it's well worth it to those who want to try.

No, I did not sand the wheel down before applying the primer. It may be silly of me, but I thought that if I messed up, I could just paint thin the wheel back to the way it was. Sanding it seemed to leave me no hope of going back. I did sand the primer before painting though. It supposedly makes it a rough surface for paint to adhere to.

whoa that looks really hot.
I think I may do this to a set of rims I have laying around - the ones in my sig.
Maybe I'll do them gloss black, but sand the rims down first.

The paint can be bought at any auto parts store such as advanced auto, autozone, etc. If you look on the duplicolor site, there is supposedly a can that comes in gloss black, but it's not called gloss black though. I've seen these paints at 5-6 locations, and NONE of them have that color even marked on their shelf. Not sure why though.
This looks like a great idea. I might just repaint my wheels, also, lol. How hard is it to polish the wheels, if I wanted to do it myself? I'm thinking about going with a gloss black for the spokes and polishing the bezel and center cap, and also the outer rim of the wheels.
Yes, it's an Acura EL

Very nice job! Actually this reminded me of MY first rim painting escapade:

Used Duplicolor Wheel Paint in graphite after stripping off the original clear coat then a light sanding job. Wet-sanded between coats, used 2 cans for 4 wheels, then clear coated. I just wanted to add a long-term opinion on the paint - it LASTS and it looks good, even up close. The rims above were bought used for $300CDN, and after painting and wearing them through WINTER, salt and frozen snowbanks and all (mounted with winter tires, so I could pimp in the snow), I was able to sell to a coworker for $350 the next season - they looked that GOOD! Last I saw the buyer's car was last month, and the finish still looks great. I highly recommend Duplicolor Wheel Paint.

... maybe it needs more clear coat to protect paint for longevity...
