Sell the Civic for a Jag?
Sell the Civic for a Jag?
Before I go dumping another 3 grand into my car to lower, replace tires, and a new alarm system I may just look at buying a used jaguar. I love my car but I have already got 21k tied up in it and to add another 3 just seems odd. I love the gas mileage and low insurance cost of the civic but I’m just ready for a car that can get up and just haul ***. Before I bought the civic I was looking at a 99 Jaguar XJR, and after the first test drive I was in love. The car had everything I wanted but good gas mileage and cheap insurance. Still being in high school insurance can make or break a decision on a car. I decided I would just buy a new civic and drive it for a few years. After getting the car I bought new wheels, clear bra, and leather interior. The car is for the most part the way I want it. Now that winter has passed I was going to get a new suspension, alarm, and tires. Just seems like I need to think it over before I spend another 3k. I can get an XJR with around 40,000 miles for about 24.
What do you think spend it or trade it?

Jaguars tend to be high maintenance cars. Not only that, but when it is maintenance time, the parts cost you an arm and a leg.
A used luxury car is the worst investment you can make. Just the same way that buying a new luxury car and selling it a few years later is a terrible investment. Most of the people who can afford a luxury car will probably buy a new one, and most who can't except when its used realise the prohibitively high maintenance costs.

Nothing works better than a Chris except a Honda.

Hmmm... You know you won't ba able to get all of it back if you sell the Civic right?
Anyway, if you really can afford a Jag, remember, Jags have been known to have a lot of problems under Ford's ownership and are the slowest selling in the PAG, then go for it.

Nevermind, FORGET IT!

Mazda is another brand regarded by some as a 'Ford' product, but my Mazda3 has had no problems to date, drives like a champ and other owners stories corroborate with my.
English automobiles, by and large, just seem sub par (not necessarily cars made there, as the Civic Si is) just look at how shyte older MGs are. There was a guy around here who's MG had a broken cooling system and a broken heater. So he was in his car freezing his a$s off while his engine was overheating.
You won't be able to get your money back out of a Jag, like I said, used luxury cars generally are shunned.

Good choice on keeping the suspension.
21K dumped into a car and you're still in high school?
That was a bad choice.
That 21K better include the cost of the car because 21k could have been a down payment toward some property that'll serve you well when you get out of college.

I don't know... I wouldn't be able to pass up a 370hp supercharged V8. Do some research on the XJR maintenance costs.
Before I bought my Mercedes, I called around to the Mercedes service centers in the area and asked common problems and basic maintenace costs. Costs really aren't that high especially if you have an independent shop in the area.

I know a bunch of Jaguar owners who haven't had any problems. Jaguars were tempermental like French poodles in the 70's and 80's but most of that has been worked out. I would avoid the X-Type since it is basically the platform of the Taurus however.
The xtype is a contour. They ride nice but for what they are it's way too much. The newer jags (xj sedans) espacially the supercharged are definately stay-away-from items. You never know if you'll get a 'good one'. I am partial to the 88 to 97 models non supercharged. I had a 'good one'. That's when they still had the straight six. Ford bought jag in 91 BTW. They have done a lot of work to the jag and turned it into a seller again. They mostly fixed the electrical problems. In 98 they made a huge mistake in putting their v8 in them. That's when all the machanical problem occured. 98 on. The deal with jag is that you need two of them. One to drive and one for parts.
I see you decided on keeping your civic. Have you tried out an IS300? You may be impressed. Try an automatic.

There was a joke once... it went, If you plan to buy a Jaguar, you better get two. Because one if them is always going to be in the shop...
But, since Ford bought them, I've noticed 2 things. 1. Reliability has gone up (thanks to Ford engines), and 2. Build quality has gone down (theres alot more Splatter on welded seams and such... there was a time when a part (Bumper, Fender, Core support ect.) from Jag was almost a work of art... every thing was perfect, from the welds to the Electra-Coat. Those days are gone. Now theres splatters from the welds, and runs in the coating.
