As a train buff as well as a car buff, I've seen too many times where this has happened. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen cars go through crossings trying to beat a train. IF the article is right, then this poor soul tried to beat a train and lost. PLEASE, due to "velocitizing", a train NEVER looks like it's going as fast as it is- same way an airplane in the sky doesn't look like it's flying all that fast. Also it's not the speed as much as all that weight behind it. A train takes a mile and a half to come to a complete stop from 60 mph. REMEMBER, at a crossing, in case of a tie, the driver loses, and the engineer has to live with that horror for the rest of their life. It's not worth risking your life to save a few minutes.

Again, I have a friend who is an engineer, and he's collided with more cars and trucks than he cares to remember, and they wear on him like a bad disease.

Anytime a life is cut short it's a sad affair. But maybe, just maybe, it'll remind us all- that driving, while fun, can get you killed if you don't "look out for the other guy", especially if they're driving a train.

Where the earth meets the sky, they'll be driving...

One of my co-workers saw the whole thing.
It's hard for me to pass by where it happened.
He always complimented my car...no matter how it
sucked compared to his.

I'm gonna miss you Sam.

Unhappy R.i.p. Samari

i am going to make this short and straight to the point: i may not have known Samari to any extent; but just like every other member of 7thgencivic.com, i feel that we have lost a piece of our selves when something like this happens. this is the saddest news to read about after being gone for a while. but rest assured, i may not know what to say about the loss of a 7th gen brother and his significant other, but all i know is that he and his g/f are in a better place and we will all be with them sooner or later...... RIP we will all miss you

sorry i havent updated you guys in a lil while, but things got pretty bad last night at Sam and Devies parents houses...first off, before we all got there, we had to cross the tracks at the exact same place that Sam was hit...it is the only entrance and exit to his parents neighborhood...i dont know how his parents are going to make it there...his parents house was flooded with family and church friends, so they were not alone...we were the only close friends of sams their...really, we were the only ones that his parents wanted...cause we knew him best...she was laughing and reminising(sp) about some other stupid funny things that he use to say when we arrived, but when she saw us, she lost it....we did too...i feel like i just lost a brother...we stayed for a couple hours and planned a few things for the funeral, but there is no exact date as of yet, because they are not releasing the bodies for the parents until wednesday...his mother is upset because they wont let her see him...His older sister is being the strong one throughout all of this when she was the one that came up on the accident...she hadnt seen Sam for a couple months and drove home from Austin Texas to be with him on his birthday and she drove up on the accident and recognized his car...she pulled up to the scene while they were putting Sam in a bodybag...that is all that she could say..."I had to see them put him in a bodybag, he deserves more than that"....she said that he was unrecognizable....we left his parents house and headed to devies parents when we noticed devies friends at the tracks, we stopped to be with them....the other 2 skunkworks members and myself started up the tracks, finding pieces of his car still everywhere...only a couple of feet from the actual spot where the train hit him...as if the car shattered...the hardest part for us was when the crew found his rear glass shattered but being held together by his tint with the SKUNKWORKS sticker still on it....

the intersection is a very bad one....and it use to have the arms on it that would come down, but his sister said that the city removed them some time ago...why????his sister said that the train engineer said that it appeared that he stopped on the tracks...the best that would can come up with is that Sam slowed waaaay down to go over the tracks because they are really rough(i rubbed bottom in my car going over them) and his car must have stalled...noticing the train, and not being able to get it started and out of the way quick enough, the train stuck him in the rear of the car....the train tracks run parrallel with the road, and it is a 4 lane highway that is always extremely busy and hard to notice a train because it goes like this....Treeline fromt the woods, train tracks, then narrow shoulder, then 4lane highway...and a train did come by when we were at the tracks lastnight, and it was difficult to hear it with the traffic on the road, granted we did hear it when it was too close, and too late because of the speed it was traveling...

they are going to have their funerals and burials together...they would have wanted it that way...as soon as the bodies are released, we will be able to set a specific funeral date, and i will post it on here....if i am permitted by their parents, i will also post their addresses for anyone that would like to send a card or flowers...thanks guys for all of your support, thoughts, and prayers...please continue to remember us and their families, because the hardest part is yet to come..

thanks, Wesley

It has been a while since I have been on but to hear from word of mouth that we lost one is never a good thing. Unfortunately I didnt get to meet Samari or speak with him but Rest in Peace. And if anyone does Flame they deserve to be taken out back and beat to hell. It is always such a shame to see someone with a great personality which seems he had and a great future ahead of them to be taken away so quickly. Only positive he is in a better place now.
RIP Samari

I didn't know Sam but I know what it is like....My dad passed away and I am still healing. My dad worked for Norfolk&Southern Railroad for 34 years. He was always on me about RR crossing safety and telling me about deaths at crosses. He told me about this all the time. I will pray for Sam's family, and the girl's family, and you JetBlu01 that posted this forum along with yours friends down in Louisiana. Hang in there man. You will make it.

There will be an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. They will examine sightlines, take witness testimony, and check to see if the engineer acted properly. In 99.9% of these cases, the verdict is driver error. Everytime you go over a crossing, you are on railroad property, subject to their rules.

Approaching a crossing is a terrifying experience for an engineer. If he sees a car ahead on the tracks, he/she throws the train into "emergency", which locks all the brakes. Then they throw the throttle into reverse to try to slow down the engine with the motor. Anything in the cab that's not nailed down goes flying. He/she slams their palm onto the horn button sending out a wailing scream of warning, says a prayer and closes their eyes. At this point there is literally nothing else they can do. And they're hoping there won't be an explosion that turns their cab into a fireball or a derailment that leaves them crushed to a bloody pulp. Engineers do get killed in collisions.

I am not playing devil's advocate here. This is a sad day. "Do not ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee...". But if it makes just one reader STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN next time they come to a crossing, then it's worth posting it.

Drive safe.

My dad , who worked for 34 years for N&S Railroad told me this exact stuff, I know you are exactly correct. I am just thinking of Sam's family and the girl's family and JetBlu01 - their sadness and loss. I want to tell them they will make it through this.

Same here...I cant bring myself to delete his screen name.

Its funny how even tho you dont know someone in person, you know them thru online and something like this still hits you. I was by no means close to him but me and him talked ever so frequently and it's just crazy to think he is gone.

RIP SAM.
