29 here...I have owned 2BMWs a 320i and a 328. Loved both cars. Didn't love the attention I recieved from the police, my insurance company, and the punk kids in my neighborhood. Since I bought the civic I have rolled right past cops with nary a second glance, my insurance is 75% cheaper and no punk kids have broke in or keyed it. With a few well chosen mods I have made the car as much fun to drive as the BMWs. For speed I take a ride on my bike (or in winter on the snowmobile) I have to agree with Yukonarts post. Living is way more fun than being superficial and living vicariously through a car. Don't get me wrong..if I was rich I would own a lambo or Mclaren or something. But I would own them to enjoy the engineering and the fun of a super fast car. not to try and show off.

doooh.. I never actually answered 2001's question. I prefer a clean ride with subtle mods. I didn't change my exhaust because I prefer a quiet car that doesn't draw a lot of attention. That it it wouldn't help that much anyway. My only external mods are rims/tires, and tinted windows. I traded in the lowering springs for Koni yellows and stock ride height. Although in retrspect I should have got some TEIN's because I do like the look of a mild drop and want to keep the adjustablity of the Konis. I do have a system but it's for clarity and not for trying to rattle the glass of the cars next to me.
Hope that helps answer your question.

To make you feel better daddy died. How does that make you feel? and yes, he did have a luxurious life, and my "mommy" and I are both trying to continue it. I just turned 18 years old... I cannot just make an easy $k... I can tell you that I will be set (job wise) through connections wise but, thats because of a lot of lil things. I still have to actually work to get $ & to have a great life, not EVERYTHING in life is free.

All i did was state my opinion... As i mentioned before, There are only people 26- mid 40's that live by me, and all i see are luxury cars. Ive been brought up loving european cars, Sorry for that

Whatever...its not really a question of whether or not you drive a luxury car. I have owned them in my 20s, but Like Yukon, Divorced twice, on my 3rd marriage and I have better things to do with my money than drive a $50k car. I could do it if I wanted, I would rather put it into the market and my new son's college fund. Not that I still don't notice them on the road, but I am glad I don't have one of Bangle's monstrosities in the driveway. I hate what he has done with the BMW line.

mndthegap1 has a spectacular aura aboutmndthegap1 has a spectacular aura about
Im 30 ive had 9 cars (a few mustangs, camaros, a 325 bmw, an acura vigor when it first came out), 4 motorcycles and a truck. and well i pissed alot of money away for a very long time lived on my own from 19 travelled alot and did all kinds of stuff.... if i would have saved the money yeah i could have bought a benz or bmw now, still could but now i got married and im saving for a house(which prob. could have had to if i didnt spend all my money) But there are circumstances i also helped my mom out growing up since my father was never around since im 3, and helped my sister out when she needed it. Alot of things determine alot where your money goes. Yeah i have a civic.. and i mod it for the fun of it and my wife and i enjoy doing it together. and ill prob. be buying my first house in the next 8-10months.
the reason i bought a vic was at the time i was saving for a wedding which cost me and my wife approx. 35,000 and yes we paid for 29,000 of it. so theres your BMW right there. so we opted for the vic cause its cheaper.
thats just me.....
and to an extent yeah if everyone saved all there money and didnt do much and was also making major money then yeah they could afford all that stuff.... i mean between my wife (27)and i (30) we make 125,000 a year and its still hard. the reality of it all is you get what you can afford and there will always be someone with more money and bigger and better toys.

dosent matter what kind of car your tuning...as long as your tuning and you love it. Could be lawn mower, could be a civic or a lambo...its not even a matter of whats more reliable and cheaper. As long as your tuning...thats my take...oh and i'm 29...

Agreed. From my experiences people have thought mommy and daddy bought my Civic coupe and did all the mods too it. When I tell them that everything I have I got myself, they don't believe me. They just think I'm some sort of shady **** that get his money illegally. Not true. I work very hard for the things I have. I'm on an academic scholarship for school, and live at home. My parents make up the difference of my education. They have the money, and I appreciate that they are giving me an education so one day I can make money and support myself. This Civic was paid in full the first day I got it. I worked many jobs for $6.00-$8.00 an hour when I was in high school. It's very hard to get ahead when you only make that much. Little by little I paid for just about half the car myself. Grandparents and parents made up the difference as a high school graduation present, so I could commute 40 miles to college each day. My hand-me-down 95' Taurus Wagon was always going to the shop.

Now I work full time, go to school full time, run a very lucrative eBay business, and run a auto-detail company when the weather permits. I have more money than most kids my age, and I sense a lot of resentment from people who don't know the "real me". I am not in any debt whatsoever, and all the mods I do to my car are funded by myself. Yes, there are family circumstances too. My sister has been in remission for cancer for the past five years. My mom cannot work, because she takes care of her full time. My dad makes a great salary, but honestly cannot afford to give me to "the good life." My situation has made me work for the things I want, made me more independent and has given me the opportunity to become resourceful in the way I go about making my money.

This post is not glorifying myself in any way. I am defending my buddy ImPuLSe who I KNOW works hard for his money in the hot sun paving driveways in a family owned business. There is NOTHING wrong with having goals and working hard to achieve them. It builds character, and will get you ahead in life. Everyone has different family circumstances as well. A loved one may die and leave you a lot of money. You parents may have a fortune and buy you that BMW you've always wanted. Or in most people’s cases, you have to work your *** off to get the things you want in life.

The moral of the story: Work hard and good things will come.

your 100% right !
as for myself we'll ive been into more show then go. As to where do i get my inspiration and as to what mods i get.. well ive been doing this for awhile w/ past cars (never a honda but a 92 vette, 95 325, 94 supercoupe )where the cars i worked on in the past so i guess that carried over to a degree. I also go to alot of shows and get ideas from that.
I deff. was into more show with the VIC before BUT now im redoing my car and now im going more twords performance.
I think prob. the bigggest influence on what i do the vic and stuff i use comes from this site.
The info and people on this site

i mean ive had custom paint (which these boards ripped apart
lambo doors, custom system, etc etc.......

Now im going for performance SF kit, ground controls konis, all strut/tower bars.
eibach anti roll kit, eventually engine internals.
im still doing custom paint in the shop now for it.

I tried to get an idea of what the 30ish person was doing to their cars and I think I set off some drama! Sorry folks, not my intention...

My car I know will always be slower than most, faster than some, but I do want it to be fun to drive. I love making people wonder how my little civic catches up to their big mustangs on a turn, so I will pay more attention to how it handles and put more$ into the suspension. I will seek a look thats clean and fits my age IMO. Where I live I see a lot of Hondas riced out by 16-20 somethings and I just don't like it. I just wanted to see where other 30+ people were doing. Thanks!

Oh by the way, I struggled through college and then did not like my major, so I went to work. I spent my money on things like trips, snowboards mountain bikes 4 other Japanese vehicles etc. I am 30 and I don't drive anything but a Civic and thats ok with me. Some day I hope to drive something along the lines of a TSX, maybe if the soon to be wife can help me out WE will have something like an S2000. She enjoys her 2003 EX sedan civic too.

As someone who just bought their second Civic at age 27(2003 Ex Coupe) I'm definitelye intending to be driving a Civic well past 30. I have no problems with it, it's affordable, low maintenance costs, good fuel efficiency, plenty of room for me and my dog, and last but not least, is pretty sharp looking, IMO.

The one bad thing about them, again IMO, is there are just too many Civics out there. Most of them in my area are the aforementioned 16-20somethings that rice up their cars to a rediculous level. I'm a big fan of performance/experience mods.

I just picked up my car near Halloween, so I've not had it long enough, and the weather in Central New York hasn't been up to doing much work. My parents have a heated garage, so while home over the hollidays I plan to insatll a Revo short throw shifter, aluminum shifter bushings, and a 440gram Skunk2 shift ****.

I also plan on installing a clone spoiler, just to break up the lines of the rear of the car. My last Civic, bought used, came with a factory spoiler, so now it just looks bare to me w/o one.

In the future, I would like to install a K&N FIPK assuming they ever release one for the '03s. A header and exhaust might come along some day, but not soon.

I don't see any need to do any additional exterior mods, at least not for my purposes, YMMV. I will make every effort to care and feed the paint, as I believe this is the one area that a little effort makes a big difference as the car ages.

So that's what this near 30 year old will be doing to his car.

I certainly don't feel like I should be driving something more expensive. With a BMW or Mercedes, I'd have a lot higher insurance, a lot higher payments, and a lot higher maintenance costs(guessing). What's the point? Yeah, if I could afford it, I'd take a Bentley in a heartbeat, but there are a lot of other things I'd sooner spend a windfall on, like paying off student loans, buying a house, or straight up investing in my brokerage account. Everyone should realize that while a car is an investment, it's not really one that will pay gains later on. Rather with some work, care, and maintenance, you're preserving the value, or slowing down it's depreciation. Not counting true "classic" cars, no one is getting rich buying new cars, then selling them used.

If my financial situation changes, I would very much like to trade up to an Accord V6, but that's going to be much later. Immediately, I have student loan payments, rent on an apartment, credit card bills, and that's without the financial burden of children! All I can hope for now is to maintain my investment in my Civic as best I can, have fun driving, and add those few modifications that might serve to make the driving experience better while providing maybe marginal performance gains.

Just my opinion on the matter, yours may be different, and that's OK

Best to all,
Pol

My dad has a very good job and can afford a high end BMW, but chooses his 99' Maxima over everything.

A wise man once told me:

"The quality of your car does not determine the quality of your life." Very True.
You're not going to afford a nice Mercedes with only $35k even today (maybe a used mid 90's or early 90's Mercedes, though). In 11 yrs when you turn 30, the price of cars will most likely be even higher.

Not true. You can get a C230, C240, or even a C320 for less than $35k.
Half-decent opinions? More like half-informed. Your definition of a "nice" car, Mercedes or not, is not necessarily what someone else considers nice or would even want to begin with.

I personally don't like Mercedes and would spend $35k on something more worthwhile than a yuppie-mobile that most people use as a status symbol....oh yeah...i forgot...Mercedes and BMW aren't the popular yuppie-mobile anymore. It's now expensive SUVs and Harley Davidsons.

WTF are you talking about? c230 compressor brand new off the lot is 29-30k ?

I like the c240 with the AWD, and that's around 34k new. Early 90's Benz for 35k? I don't think so unless it was a high class like a mint s500.

And No, I dont' think the price of cars will be higher in 11 years.

They sure will... inflation, technology,etc... many factors increase the price of cars, especially when people are willing to pay top $$ for a prestigious automobile...

I agree. There is a difference between a Mercedes and a nice one.

I am not a fan of the C-class, it's far too vanilla for me, except the C32.
The C230 "coupe" is particularly hideous.

Just to voice my opinion: I think a lot of people over 30 have more important things to worry about than cars. I'll probably be driving a nice truck or sedan, maybe lightly modified when I'm over 30, but I'd be concerned more with my kids or my health. However, before then, I'll be living it up when I graduate college and my parents let me touch what was supposed to be my college fund (full ride).
