Coilover spring binding and sound fix!
Coilover spring binding and sound fix!
Finally found something that will work to relieve the spring pressure in all of us that have coilovers that pop, tong, or just have pressure (if you don't hear it, you probably still have it, which prevents smooth steering). I've tried plastic washers and metals ones that came with my Ksports and even custom nylon washers, but recently found a bearing available specifically made for coilovers with an inside diameter of 2.5"
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...t=hal-7888-109
It's called a roller thrust bearing, which is essentially a washer with a number of rollers in it that sit across the washer face. On either side goes a metal washer that spins on the rollers. For $35 shipped, it's a pretty cheap fix.
I'll update next week when they're in my car, but for now, I'm 95% sure that these will work. I took some pictures below for sizing reference and a better description.

Outside Diameter (3.25")

Yeah, sorry haven't had the chance to update. This has pretty much eliminated the problem entirely. I had a day where the sound came back, but it went away the next. I didn't use lubrication, so that may be a nice insurance policy too.
I'd highly reccomend them! They're way better then any other option I've tried.

Sorry man, I didn't take any pictures. It's really pretty easy. First take loosen the top bolt on the strut, then remove the entire strut from the car. Make sure the spring isn't under pressure (if it is, use a spring compressor or move the bottom spring perch down) and finish removing the top nut. Take the pillowball mount (or whatever you have on top) off and lift off the spring. Sandwich the bearing between two metal washers (included) and place them under the spring. Then just do everything in reverse, and repeat for the other side.
That is assuming you know how to remove and install the suspension. If you're not familiar, check out the DIY spring install.

Well they're for a 2.5" ID (Inner Diameter) spring, so if they're that, and it has a flat surface under the spring for them to sit on, then yes. If they're stock sized springs, or have a detent for the end of the spring, then no.

hm i know they're not stock size, but here's a pic of exactly wat i got. kus i lost my bearings and it makes noises when i turn slowly and etc..

Re: Coilover spring binding and sound fix!
I used it on the bottom of the spring, between the bottom spring perch and the spring. At least on Ksports, my top perch spins pretty freely on the shock body. Really you could use them wherever you choose though.
Just a heads up, I've noticed that because my bottom spring perch is staggered on the edges, the bottom washer has bent slightly. If you have extra metal washers, it'd probably be a good idea to double them up if this is your situation.

Re: Coilover spring binding and sound fix!
yeah i guess i can do that. but my struts are prolly blown. i was planning on getting full coilovers. do i still need it (leaning towards TEIN)? i was told that i dont need any bearings (stock one) if im getting full coilovers. IS THIS TRUE?

Re: Coilover spring binding and sound fix!
I think you guys may be confusing this with the OEM bearing. This IS NOT the same. It can only be used on 2.5" coilovers (I've only used on full coils, not sleeves) and it's designed to be used on the BOTTOM of the spring. It allows for the spring to turn. It does serve the same purpose of the OEM bearing, but is in no was a replacement part or an alternative. The OEM bearing sits between the spring top mount and the top mount on the strut. This bearing actually contacts the spring directly. (But again, they are for two different applications). Hope this clears some confusion up.
For the Teins, I've heard most people don't have the problem I did, so I'd say try it w/o and if you have a problem, then get 'em.

Binding usually occurs at the top and it can be used with things like GC coilovers at the top because you use a special plate that attaches to the bearing.
