man i dont even know why you guys are waiting for tokico's... they've been saying its going to come out for almost a year now..
n ya they're going to be full struts..
you cant really compare true coilovers(tein ss) to aftermarket shocks..

i dont think they're out for the rsx yet.. i think when i called they said they were working on it... dont remember too well tho..
man konis just came out about a month ago for the rsx's so..

i called a few weeks ago and they said they HOPE six months, but they aren't promising anything. HOpefully they will be out during the summer. I am waiting for them because you can get a shock/spring package for the same price as just the konis. the HR cup kit is nice but too low for me and Tein/B&G/JIC are all too expensive.

really? wonder why they're so slow at developing it? gee... you would think since we drive a civic, stuff would be coming out fast for our cars... but i guess aftermarket companies wants to see how well the newest gen civic sells first. but this is crazy long... the car's been out for more than 2 years now... even the rsx seems to be beating us in the aftermarket support...

oh well... nothing we can do...

They are working on it and from what they say, our cars aren't very easy to modify. If it were then everyone would have shocks out already. i think it says something that is very little companies with shocks/struts out now which means they are finding it difficult to develop. They know that the new civic will be modified like previous ones so they are working on it.

What do they have to modify? Simply copy the oe design for the most part and put a high-performance tokico strut in it. I don't see the problem unless it involves setting up the machinery and line to make the darn things. I mean, if they are going to be full replacements, doesn't it make sense that they will be just like the oe parts?

I was going to wait as I didn't like the idea of inserts nor the price. I have had tokicos before and was very pleased with them. However, my car is too bouncy and the struts are completely gone and I can't take it. So, konis on Wednesday! I can't f-in wait.

I don't think anyone necessarily thinks there better because of how much they cost. I think they feel that the koni brand itself is better. I don't think so. I am getting them because I need struts and they are the only thing out. I have been waiting for months. They said hopefully w/i the next 6 months but they can't promise anything. I wanted tokicos too since I have prior experience with them. However, a few months of blown struts w/ a lowered car and you just might change your mind. EDIT: The koni struts are expensive because they are ADJUSTIBLE. That is the main reason. Well, they can charge a wee bit more since they are the only strut on the market too. I at least hope they do or they need to rethink their price.

I don't know for sure, but they make both performance and Illumina style shocks for most hondas. The illumina ones are the adjustable ones. They also make suspension kits that are a shock/spring combo. Like I said, i am not sure if this will be the case but judging from other honda applications I am sure they will be offering the same kind of products. And to answer your question about pricing, the lady from tokico quoted me around $780 as list pricing for a shock/spring combo, but since most people never buy the stuff for list I am sure we could get it for around $650/700.

if the shocks are gonna cost $650-700... then i rather get the konis... forget the full strut replacement...

but if it's the same price or less than the konis, then i'll get the tokicos...

the koni yellows are $550 because they have adjustable damping.

the koni reds (which are not out, and no ETA) aren't adjustable, and should be cheaper.
same with tokico blues

tokico illuminas are similar to the koni yellows in that they also have adjustable damping

i personally am waiting for the tokicos simply because i will never use the adjustable damping on the konis and therefore don't wish to pay for them.

Well, I now have the konis sitting in a box waiting for me to install them. I hope they perform better than their appearance suggest. The insert idea still bothers me but is nothing more than a cheap alternative to a full replacement. I bet it took 2 hrs to design and get that insert coming off the line.

The rear struts; well they are cheap as hay too. The perch is terribly flimsy. It ‘s not even welded to the strut housing. Yes, it has adjustable height but the little clip rings the perches sit on are begging for disaster. If my rear ends up on the pavement, guess who is going to pay for it...

Koni had one objective when producing these struts - get them on the market yesterday. It's so obvious that the yellow color couldn't be more fitting. I am glad I got mine used because I would have been royally disappointed if I had spent $550. But hey, if you are the only choice and own the market, the customer doesn't have a choice.

I will never buy another Koni product. I had tokico blues on a previous car that was lowered 2 inches. They cost less than half as much and had 2x the quality. I have a strong suspicion that tokico will put the konis to shame.

Lastly, with all due respect, I haven't actually used the product and that is what matters most. I just can't get over the rear strut design.…

hey mbow.. can you take pictures of the rear strut? i want to see how the clip things actually work.. cause i'm thinking this is how the cup kit is going to look.. how much height adjustability do you think you get with it? n ya i've seen koni's shocks before and the perch and welds do seem kinda weak.. the perch buckled and bent on one of the members here. haha not to scare you or anything..

Yea, I take some pics..just a sec or two...

This is the perch itself.


Full picture of strut w/o perch. You can see the 2 circles that allow for height adjustment. You can probably barely make out the ring in the lower circle that the perch sits on. I pertrudes from the strut by about 1-2mm.


Close up pic of the 2 adjustment circles. You can see the ring that the perch and CAR rest on. The ring just spreads apart to remove and snaps back into place. I don't know if that makes sense but you should be able to tell what I am talking about from the pic.



Lastly, a shot from the bottom w/perch on the strut so you can see exactly how it would sit w/spring mounted and on the car.

not exactly sure how the ring unclips but i'm sure i'll figure people will figure it out when its in their hands.. but ya THANKS!!! i finally understand how the "height adjustable" thing works.. i'm almost sure thats how the cup kit is going to be. but ya kinda scary how half the car sits on that one little ring.. its not even welded on or anything.. but hey if they've been using it for years then i guess it must work.. if it doesnt, i guess i'll be getting a new car . but ya thanks again..

LOL...Yea, I guess it does work. It's just scary looking imo. I would prefer a setup like the stock struts where the perch is welded to the housing.

As far as the ring, see how it is not a complete circle and there is about a cm gap in it in the pic. Well, you just spread that gap open by pulling on each side but it wants to stay in the circular shape. So, once off it will close back up into a circle. Kinda like a key ring when you get a key off. You can seperate it a little to get the key off and then it snap backs into place. I don't know...i tried.

Oh, that ring is really just like a ring you would wear on your finger. It's called a "collar" technically. Anyhow, it's a ring that has a little gap missing. I don't explain things well...sorry..

Geez.. not sure I would put alot of trust into that design either. The perch from the color looks like its made from hardened steel, but seems like it should have a lip around it to keep the spring in and the coils from separating.

That snap ring looks very thin. A better fix rather then just tack welding the ring to the strut would be to have a larger ring welded to strut under the perch instead. Or some small plates at say 4, 8 and 12 o'clock positions would work also. This is assuming it doesnt compromise the safety of the strut by welding stuff to it.

Koni's are also expensive because they last longer too. (mine lasted over a 100k on my VW)
Everyone here talks about wait to blow their shocks, or talks about how they are already blown.

Koni did get there shocks out the quickest because they did a half *** job, but its a difficult job to do completely, but I am fairly sure the Koni's performance is up to their own high quality standards......

Tokico did say they would be out in Dec02-Jan03, but now its summer??? I NEED DECENT SHOCKS!!!
I don't want Koni yellows, you know why? -The Civic's steering sucks (IMHO), it's not like a sportscar, it has passenger car qualities. With that issue in mind, I don't want a race car ride.

Konis giving the car a sports car ride???? They are adjustable and the softest setting is supposed to ride like stock struts. That's the whole point; Soft for the daily commute w/ a firm sport setting just a twist away on the weekends.

A lot of people have them on the site and haven't had any problems so I guess it will be ok.


EDIT: The perch is raised in the center so that inside of the coils is up aganst it. So, I doesn't look like it could move off the perch or slide at all.

Guess what I blew out 2 Konis. I had only had them maybe a month. I finally replaced them but damn I shoudn't have blown them. I've even heard of a guy here that had Konis on his 7thgen and said that the front shock came off on him while he was driving. I hope the Tokicos are going to be better. Which are better the Tokicos or the KYB[IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/IMG][IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/IMG]

Do you have to have a receipt to get koni struts repaired/replaced under warranty? Anyone know how konis warranty policy works..

Konis are expensive because they are adjustable and currently the ONLY strut on the market for our cars. They rushed these things to market so they could reap the rewards...It's called business though...

I would prefer tokico myself since I have had them before. They come with a lifetime warranty as long as you don't drop the car in the weeds.

Which manufacturer is best is going to depend on who you ask. I would look at the design of the strut and the warranty. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I would just prefer full-replacements in the front and a welded on non-adjustable perch in the rear.
