'01 Civic Suspension (What causes the problem)?

I've read several posts on here about the '01 Civics being bouncy, and I agree. I have a '01 Civic 2 dr EX, and the bouncy ride gets to me when I'm not on glass smooth surfaces.

So what's the problem, and how can it be alleviated? Is is the rear struts or the rear springs?

I've thought about replacing the rear struts. Maybe going with Koni Yellows or the '02/'03 factory struts that are supposed to be improved. I just want the bounciness to be fixed. I hear that the Koni Yellows don't cause the ride quality to deteriote so much if they're left on the "soft" setting. However, I can get factory struts for $87 each, but I think if I get the springs, too, it's about $165 each. I think I can get Koni Yellows for about $170 each. Would I need to replace the springs AND the struts, or would replacing the struts fix the bounciness that I'm experiening?

Thanks.

I wanted to add that I'm really not intereted in lowering my car. Also, with the Koni Yellows, would I have to cut the front springs? I'm really only concerned about the rear's bounciness, so I'd probably just replace the back struts if that's possible. Thanks for any help that you guys might be able to provide. Have a good one.

i'm not sure if they changed the springs or the strut but i'm sure changing them to konis would fix your problem. just get the rear ones.
if you have money and want to, replace the front as well. you dont cut the springs but you do cut the shock/strut.

The problem with buying the factory struts is they usually don't last more then 20,000miles.
Koni's or other good shocks can last 100,000miles or more.
What about just getting the Eibach pro-kit spings or H&R sportline springs?
Does anyone have stock struts and the Eibach pro-kit spings or H&R sportline springs?
Does it still bounce?

So guys, do you think it'd help if I just buy Koni Yellows for the rear? I just want to get rid of the bounciness. Has anyone done this with success?

Thanks.

You have to take into consideration that when you put lowering springs on your car, the ride is not going to be the same as stock. The OEM struts/shocks are not meant to have that short of a travel distance. To really get a good, smooth and even ride, you will need aftermarket shocks/struts. Now if you haven't lowered it, the ride should be fine....sounds like a warranty issue if it is that bad.

I wouldn't even think of buying 2 shocks, save your money and get 4.
There is way too much difference between koni's and stock.

The newer factory stuff isn't a bad option, but they won't last nearly as long as the Koni's.

The reason why the '01 Civic has a very boucny rear is due to two things. Very very light weight rear end and underdamped shocks. The 02 and 03 civics have been retuned with upgraded shocks/springs so it's less bouncy. but you have to take into account that they tweaked the control arms as well.

I don't know for sure if replacing the rear with 02 or 03 stock shocks will help, but it should. If you go with aftermarket, you should buy 4 because the different is just too too great between the two setups

When my rear end go over potholes, my whole car seems like it's tossed off the ground and shifted 2cm to one direction. Not very comforting when the car bounces that much.

Rear suspension on 2k1īs sucks so bad. Funny thing is I donīt remember my car being so bouncy when I first got it, it started bouncing really bad after one year. I have lifted the car and checked it at the dealer and they say everything is fine, that it would be a waste to change the shocks, but the ride keeps getting worse. They blame it on my rims and wheels, which I donīt believe because I got 16 inches on 225/50īs, which actually should be helping to reduce the bouncyness.

Iīve been looking for the Koni Yellows in Mexico and finally found them at a store for $750 usd. Iīll probably get them, but now Iīm also wondering if I should get eibach springs also, I donīt want to lower the car and donīt want the ride to become harsh.

Will stock springs work with the Konis to eliminate the bouncy ride?
