2001 civic ex auto need new struts? where
i hear ebay a lot. car has 200k and on original suspension. I don't care to lower it. I just want to restore my stock suspension. is it a good idea to replace the spring too. can someone post a link of the correct struts to buy complete assemblies. not looking to empty my wallet on this thing
Re: 2001 civic ex auto need new struts? where
i did this to both my 02 and 01 civic ex an dx. my 02 ex has the tokico blue shocks all the way around. i have 18's on the both cars. i loooove the tokico blues. its a simple and affordable upgrade from stock and the car corners like its on rails.
to the 01 dx i did oem shocks all around. its a great ride from the worn out **** that was on there.
both cars i used the original springs. when you buy shocks and struts they dont come with springs (thats extra) its a simple procedure to change over. go to your local autoparts store and rent the STRUT spring compression tool. it doesnt cost to rent the tool. put it on a card, and when you return it you get the money back.
now putting them on the car requires some mechanical skills. if you can change your own oil you can do this so dont worry. the fronts are the three bolts on top of the tower under the hood and the two big bolts holding the shock to the knuckle. one of the bolts is a camber bolt (top one) so dont expect it to come right out without twisting it while you tap on it. (yes you will have to get an alignment done afterwards. always a good investment anyways.) use your comp tool and squeeze the spring then take the top bolt off. an impact gun will make this easy. pay attention to the order of all parts when dissecting any suspension components. its easy to put things back together wrong.
reassemble in reverse order.
now the back are actually a little more stubborn to put back in. i usually use crowbars and a hammer to get the bottom aligned back up to get the bolt back in. just work slow and use caution, a little patience goes a long way.
all parts were ordered on ebay for both cars

what about the bearing and strut tops. while I am in there I don't want to be waiting on parts. what does everyone suggest I change when I go in there
Re: 2001 civic ex auto need new struts? where
i still have the originals. no problems what-so-ever. just greased everything up with red synthetic bearing grease. they dont really turn enough to get worn, they just dry up a little. unless you put 200000miles of road coarse on them you should be fine.
