05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Ok, so I was looking at hopupracing.com and I came across a few different coilovers. The Megan racing 32 way adjustable the ksport kontrol pro, D2 racing sports RS and tein basic damper, their might be more but idk.
This will mostly be a daily driver but I want it to ride good and be reliable, I heard good reviews about the d2 but I'm looking for more responses, price isn't my main concern but I'm looking to keep it under a 1000 shipped.

K-sport = Orange Chinese Junk
D2 = Purple Chinese Junk
Tein Basic = Stripped down version of a decent coilover that have a reputation for blowing.
Megan Racing = Red Chinese so so coilovers, they'd be my choice of what you have listed.
Billstein/GC (a little over your budget), Koni/GC and Progress full coilovers are the best options without spending closer to $I500+ IMO.

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
A set of full coilovers are unlike other performance products where you can afford to buy the budget chinese part, I would consider running D2 control arms if the function 7 ones weren't so well priced for example. Coilovers are highly engineered, the play a massive role in the safety and performance of your car, they have numerous moving parts and are exposed to more abuse than any other part of your car do its location and function.
For that reason, I'd only run products manufactured in first world countries like Canada, Germany or Japan. I would also consider buying coilovers manufactured in the States, even though they're a second world country.

hands down the best setup for under a grand for the EM2 is progress technology if you get anything else i will have to smack you lol. ksport and d2 are the same thing just different colors and that 32 way adjustable is bull **** its only 3 soft medium and hard. don't get anything other then progress if you want a full system. here is were i bought mine

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
I appreciate the honesty lol those were the kind of answers I was looking for, initially what I was gonna do is a tanabe drop coil and KGB gr-2 strut for 600ish I'll check out the progress line, but your really killing me tellin Me i have to wait for good coilovers lol, I can save about 100 a week and I'll have 700 by friday... I'm pretty sure I'll need a rear camber kit as well... So aside from progress, what other lines should I be looking into?

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
from their web site:
Another benefit of the Series I kits is that we can custom valve the dampening levels and spring rates for a wide range of specialty street & track applications such as autocross, road racing, and drag racing.
The Series II kits are a sleeve-over design and they use a sealed shock. The shocks are not re-buildable and we can't fine tune the dampening levels like we can with Series I. The Series II shocks are manufactured to our specifications and replacement shocks are available through Progress for a very reasonable price. The Series II kits have been shown to handle upwards of 800 pound spring rates. If you're on a tight budget and you're looking for a good spring and shock package, you can't go wrong with the Series II kits.
but you need stiffer (and longer? not sure if they would coil bind then.) springs for the weight and revalve to the springs.
If you decided on them, just call progress? or dezod?

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Looks like I'll go with the series 1 coilovers from progress, if I want them custom valved their facility is a 140 mile drive from my town. Thanks guys for your help! I'll start off with a 1" drop until these tires 205/55/16's(have less than a 1000 miles on them) wear out then I'll drop it lower once I throw on some 205/45's,

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Just adjustable coils isn't really the correct way to look at ground control sleeves, they're a very high end product that utilizes eibach springs, that's nothing to scoff at. Ground Control makes products for us Honda guys, but their core market is BMW performance and that says a lot about the quality of their products.
Combine GC with a high end strut or shock and there's absolutely no reason that they can't match or outperform many full coilovers, the only coilovers I would choose over bilstein/GC are all well over $2k.

Koni's, bilsteins too.
The shocks and springs needs to be well matched to work together. That's the main secret to make firm, stiff but still confortable ride (somewhat
). Actually, like they say, tires/car weight/use of the car determine spring rates, shocks need to be valves for them and fine-tune with sway bars.

I hit edit instead of quote on your post sdaidoji, I didn't actually change anything though.
Ground control allows you to order custom spring rates, so you can order spring rates that match up with the rest of your suspension. That's a bid advantage!

they are very well known in the miata world too.

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Well my girl gave me the "ok" ... Said go crazy lol so while I'm on the subject, what else should I get? Keep in mine it's more of a to have sorta thing then for me to actually use at a track... Mostly just canyon carving. But I'm thinkin rear lower control arms and anti-sway bars and strut braces... Idk if I can do front control arms or not... I work for a powder coating company so whatever color it comes in won't matter, I'll prolly coat it black or color coat it to match my car
... What would you do if you were on a mild budget?

also when you order them make sure you tell them what year the car is because the crash bolts vary from 01-05 you need them at 16mm. also you will need the plastic upper strut bearings from a 2001 you can order them here #9 in the diagram you mite also want to replace your left and right shock mounts #10-#11 they tend to get worn and get noisy after installing coilovers.

On a 7g civic rear aftermarket LCAs are a entirely cosmetic piece, if that's cool with you go for it.
For serious suspension performance sway bars are where you want to put your money.

progress technology also makes a nice rear anti-roll bar and its a decent price

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
You make an interesting point about the added weight of stereo equipment in the trunk. I have about 100 lbs back there and hadn't thought to include that in my calculations for lowering springs or coilovers. Good food for thought.
Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Are strut braces a useable piece? I'm told cuz I'm running the AEM V2 intake that only the DC one will work.
Right now it looks like I have the progress coilovers anti sways and camber kits to buy so far... I can't wait to see the improvement after the install.

neuspeed should clear too?
they will make the car less sloppy, but will not change performance, just the feel of the steering.

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Sdaid, sounds like a needed performance piece then :-)... I was thinking, to really feel the change, I should change everything at once instead of coilovers now then 2 months later sway bars and strut brace, I should just set the struts aside and wait til I get the rest and do it all at once. And maybe then i will only need to align it once too

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
sways and strut bar install does not require alignment, so you can do the coils now.
That will also tell you what exactly difference each of them gives you.
The strut bar increases driver confidence, does not provide much improvements in suspension works ( the civic tower are not that far from the firewall as some of the cars that would benefit more from less twist.
price is not too high, so go for it.

Anyways Sik05civic. For my 05 LX I got the C8Sport SSD coilovers (Front 8kg, Rear=10kg spring rates).
I should have them on the car in a few weeks, and will let you know what I think, as another option for you to think about.

Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
also if im mistaken the LX model did not come with a stock rear sway so you will also have to purchase the progress technology adapter kit http://www.progressauto.com/products.../productID/477 and the NEUSPEED bar is the only good strut bar for the EM2 in my opinion because one its one solid piece and two it will clear any intake on the market http://www.corsportusa.com/store/cat...roducts_id=190
Re: 05 civic lx, which coilover's should I get?
Yeah, I read that too about an LX not having rear sway. So I immediate when out and checked, but I did have one, the next day I put a Type-S bar on..haha
