DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

To my knowledge the front upper sway bar from a DC5 has never been put on an em2, but aside from the lack of mounting holes I'm not sure why it hasn't been. I'm a ***** for any suspension upgrade possible and I'm not afraid of drilling a couple holes to mount this up, especially if I'd be the first one to do it. Before I shell out and buy the titanium DC one, I wanted to hear some thoughts from you guys?

If I do it I would probably drill holes by the strut tower to mount, but ignore the mounting points on the firewall.

OK, you win, Mindbomber... I was trying to be just a lurker for a while, but anyways...
do you mean sways, strut bar, bracing? 'cos upper sway...
If sway, front track in DC5 is about 15mm wider, if i am not mistaken

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

I knew you couldn't resist this one!
My gf talked me out of buying a titanium opak strut bar and I'm getting a cusco one instead, so I have some extra money that I want to put into the front suspension. It is ultimately more of a cosmetic than functional upgrade..

Here's a pic of the bar I'm thinking of mounting.

If you not sure what bar I'm talking about then follow this link, there are a ton of pictures of it and where it mounts.

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

bait and hook... darn...
Like i say, some guys die by their mouths - and these are known as fish...
I will take a look - I gues the DC strut bar is well reviewed? I use the neuspeed one-piece - did do some difference in steering feel, odd even. Felts better the understeering (not increase in understeer, i mean, but a better feel of what's going on under there, and more controllable.)
Also, feels better when passing speed bumps or sidewalks sideways - stiffer, not like one side raises and then the other, but more like the suspension is working - yeah pretty subjective description...

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

yes, i just read the thread. The OP is mistakenly calling a strut bar as sway bar. This seems to be a 3-point strut bar (can be found on the 3rd generation Miata as well. It is supposed to be stiffer than the normal 2-point strut bars, since it bolts to the firewall (however, it depends on how thick the firewall is...)

I am not sure if the mounting points are the same dimension, though. I know that installinga DC5 LCA will increase the track width in front by 15mm (might warrant a RSX front sway).

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

I'm going to install the DC5R forged aluminum LCAs this summer hopefully, so the track width will be increased..

Basically this is a second bar, I'll have the Cusco (even though I want the opak) strut bar and if I can get this to work it will run underneath the strut bar and mount to the strut tower and up against the firewall.

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

I know the cusco fits, this is an entirely different piece.

The DC5-S has a upper and lower sway bar, we only have a lower. The upper sway bar mounts to the strut tower and to the firewall by where our intake it is, it would be a totally custom fit.. I would need to drill holes to put it in.. I'll try to get more pics.

Not without the Type-R knuckle and damper. The subframe and strut tower mounts don't differ in location, though.

As for the 05-06 DC5 lower control arms, there is a slight difference in ball joints between the 02-04, and the 05-06 model DC5's. So, no, 05-06 DC5 lower control arms will not work with 7th Generation Civics (unless you replace the knuckle and other relative components, as well).

You won't see any difference between the two different styles of 7th Gen. Civic front lower control arms. Only the DC5 saw changes from it's two styles.

Damn! I thought the type-r control arms would bolt up to the type-s knuckles, I forgot their different!

I should have remembered though, because the Spoon ball joints only work on type-r knuckles. I guess that swap is farther away than I hoped.

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

OK, here goes the summary of them:
from Metal Viper:
if you are using itr front lcas, you will have to get the ball joint reducers from King Motorsports so that the em2 ball joints will fit in them. You also will only be able to bolt on the itr front sway bar as the stock one isnt long enough

I personally see no gains in this. its a lot of work for no reason, to get parts and for everything to match up. even if you got them for free, youd still need specific parts for them to work. and in terms of weight reduction/material uses, come on. be serious.

about 1 degree from the LCAs alone. doesnt sound like much but it is. Every bit of castor is a plus, considering how hard it is to actually add castor to these cars. If you dont track or autox then the caster gain will never be noticeable. but just having to install some sleeves for the ball joints & not run a front sway bar doesnt sound like much. hell I havent been running a front sway bar for like a year

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

10lbs of unsprung weight, a stiffer control arm and the ability to run spoon ball joints is a big deal. Those guys don't know what they're talking about.

back on topic though, one crazy project at a time lol

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

Actually, i think metal viper seems to know what he is taliking about. OBK, ot so sure...
Anyway, this front Sway seems a very odd design... I suppose the part circled in red that the guy did cut out because he did not need it, well, that was actually the link to the spring? that was actually what it made it work as sway bar? Not sure how it would make it work as sway if it is tightly tied to the towers... I will need to take a deeper look at that... Seems very interesting concept - never did look at an RSX that closer... Always preffered the ol' integra...
Thanks, you have hooked this ol' fart... Mechanical engineer senses at full throttle. Very interesting . need to dig some underground japanese sites (if they are online, i mean...) Argh! your fault!

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

Darn... nothing good comes out of it... they will be most likely be cosmetic, as you first stated...
Recommend getting the neuspeed -they are actually functional in some form... I do not regret getting them and installing. If you don't mount these in the firewall, they have only one bar (curved to boot, so lower stiffness than the 2 bar type of the neuspeed), so expect lower stiffness.

If i said some (many) dumb stuff, just whip me in the back side - sometimes i get carried away... especially when i see a design that i have not seem before... Mechanical instincts... Thought on going back and deleting some places, but i guess they are not that deletable after all... and sorry for messing your thread...

I would have two bars, basically the set-up in the pic except on my em2 instead of a dc5.

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

uhn,
I know you know what you doing, don't see issues to stiffen the towers as much as possible to eliminate any possible flex up there.
Also, you planning on going ES bushings to eliminate lower play, i suppose.
Guess you have the fabrication skills for any surprise that could be in the way.
So, go ahead?
If the strut bar fits, it would mean great chances that these bars could also fit with minimal issues (drilling aside).
And if you don't plan on bolting them to the firewall, the potential cracks of an 3-point will not be an issue.
G'lucky?
I have a convertible car too, so know the importance of chassis stiffening.

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

I've been thinking about something like that for years, I knew it would be possible with some clever linkages.

I think there's even someone out there making a kit to convert a CRX to mid-engine RWD for auto-cross.

^It's hard to find things people haven't done and I think this is one of them, if it fits it would be a simple to mount to the firewall as well with a bit of angle iron.

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

i havent read any of the post, but our stock front sway is already very good. its lighter than most (hollow) yet still functional. the best compromise between weight and function. and most models its a 22mm (what my 02 has at least). going from no bar to stock is a big difference, but going from stock to a solid bar not so much. just seems like alot of work for nothing. esp when plenty of aftermarket option are there and better quality. if you meant upper strut bar, a one piece like the *neuspeed* works well to take away some of play in the steering wheel but thats about it. and its a perfect bolton to the factory strut towers.

Now, on a serious note, have you looked at these? Stock strut bars for sale, but it seems 165 each

Re: DC5 Front Upper Sway Bar on an EM2

I bought the DC5-S one this morning for $25 from a scrap yard, haven't test fitted or started fiddling with them yet though. Got to get some homework done!

Moton Coilovers are amazing, but unless your auto-crossing professionally and have sponsorships they're just to expensive and serious overkill. A set of bilsteins are definitely in my future though.
