i think the guy at the alignment shop is BSing you. i have my car pretty much slammed and i have no problems with my steering being the way you described it.
ask them to check the alignment again incase it went off again. thats the only thing i can think of, assuming that nothing else is wrong with your car.

having the car low should not affect your steering. something is wrong there. the only time that my steering went loose like that was when my friend took out my power steering rack to replace it with another rack. therefore, the steering wheel was not attached to the rack in the engine bay.
