New shocks/struts, what to reuse vs replace? **UPDATE**

New shocks/struts, what to reuse vs replace? **UPDATE**

I've read numerous threads that say replace this, don't replace that, replace only if the car has a lot of miles, etc. Is there a definate thread anywhere that says what MUST be replaced and what SHOULD be replaced?

From what I've found so far:
Should replace: #9 and #10 for the fronts and reuse everything from the rear.

My 2001 EX Coupe has 75,000 miles and I would like to order anything else that should be replaced at one time to avoid the Majestic Magic Mark-Up. Also, if it matters, I will be installing KYB AGX with Eibach Pro-Kits.


**UPDATE 06/2206**
So I finally installed the shocks/struts and new pieces. For the record, I ordered:
Fronts - #2, 7, and 9
Rears - #8, 10, 12, and 16

Upon installation:
#7 for the fronts is metal and does not need to be replaced
there are actually (2) #8 in the rear per side (one facing up and one facing down)

If you want to overhaul your entire suspension, just get the whole upper mount. You don't have to replace any of it, but since it is rubber and it has been 75k, just replace it all. Just my opinion. Again, you can reuse the whole uppe rmount and the dust boot, but if you think they need to be changed then change them.

So to err on the conservative due to the mileage of the components, I should replace #2, 7, 9, and 10/11 for the fronts


and #8, 9, 13, and 12 for the rears. Do I need 2 #8 per side or does the drawing just show it twice.


So with all that, it comes to $205.98. Ouch. Let me see, #9 and 13 for the rears are plastic pieces which should be okay to reuse. That drops it to $151.14, more reasonable. Should I even worry about replacing anything for the rears? That would be $120.54. Hmmm

What to do, what to do...

For the rears, those are all plastic pieces. Unless they are cracked, then you don't have to replace them. 10 maybe, 14 maybe, 16 definitely.

Fronts - 2, 7, 9 i think you should replace. For 10/11, look at the rubber inserts to see if they are busted. If they are, then get 10/11. AGain, maybe boiler or zzyzx has more input.

So if addressing all of the rubber pieces for the rear, then it would be #8, 10, (8 again?), 12, 14, and 16. Are there 2 #8 or not?

numero 12 in the rear is plastic as far as I remember. If not, it should not need to be replaced.

Numero 10 is an o ring, so it is prolly good to get.

I can't remember if 8 is rubber or metal...hmm It is one piece with two parts.

I also can't remember if 14 is rubber but I think it is. I prolly doesn't have to be replaced

16 is the bump stop and is prolly tore up. They are cheap.

So my best guess is to at least get 10 and 16. 12 you can reuse, and 8 and 14 are maybes. AGain, don't hold me responsible if I am steering you in the wrong direction. I have only taken apart stock suspension 2 times and trying to use what I remember.


For the fronts, you can see the rubber mount in the engine bay. Look where the shock towers are, look into the hole that the shock comes through, and see whether the rubber is cracking.

Okay, so this is where I am:
Fronts - #2, 7, and 9 (rubber mount doesn't appear to be cracked so no #10/11)
Rears - #8, 10, 12, and 16 (#8 and 12 are specified as rubber on Majestic so why not, and #14 looks plastic in pic from Mex's DIY)

Total is $127.70. That's bearable.

Thank you so much robbclark1, you've really helped! I was thinking of replacing all of the rubber pieces due to their age, and I think you led me in a good direction! I will only hold you responsible if everything works out perfectly!

14 is metal actually, now that I see the pic. Forgot the DIY was up there. Thanks for the pic.

12 is that piece wrapped around the dust boot. I highly doubt you need it, but you can it if you want. 8 and 16 are probably good choices to update. Number 10 in the rear, I don't know what that is for and I can't see it in the picture....Looks like an O Ring.
