Stripped Tie Rod Bolt...HELP!

I was installing my new coilovers, and I managed to strip the tie rod bolt. I dunno what to do...Can I go to honda and replace the bolt itself? Does the bolt even come off? I tried to put the nut on...but it gets stuck cuz the bolt threads are messed up, then the bolt just starts to turn. How do I take the bolt out? Should I just try to rethread the bolt?

FVCK!!!

you are talking about the outer tie rod right? The one that connects to the steering arm? If so just replace the tie rod end. It is $40 or so from honda. That nut needs to be on the end of it with a cotter pin, otherwise that tie rod could come off causing some major damage.

its 62 bucks from the dealership for a tie rod end.. well, at least in upstate NY... i fuked up my passenger side one... i took a dremel to it to grind off the messed up threads and used the nut to cut new threads... i just made sure that the cotter pin is still usable..

i'm using that as a temporary fix until i get a new one..

I did the same exact thing for the same mod. And I'm telling you...it's going to be hell trying to get that piece off. It took me 3 hours to get it off. If you can get an air wrench or some strong gripping monkey wrenches....and don't try to lube/slick the tie rod threads it will make it much much harder to get off bc 1) it wont get into the thread 2)your tools won't stay on haha hope you get it worked out

I did the same thing replacing my shocks with HPs. I just went to wall mart and bought a dremmel tool, cut off the threads that were stripped, put the bolt back on, slid in the cotter pin and took the dremmel back to wally world.

Guilty too. I did it by pounding on the tie rod end to get it to come out (which I have done in the past with much success 5-10 times), but this time it mushroomed the head and I wasn't able to get the nut on. Damn it! This was a while back BTW...

Anyway, I had my grandpa fix it for me. What he did was take a file and modify the end by hand so that the nut fit. He basically re-threaded the end with a file. Took a while, but it worked. I'm using that now until I get some aftermarket tie rod ends.

There's a ton of them on Ebay, you just have to know which ones will fit. That's the hard part. They're cheap too. I want some with Zerk fittings on them and rubber seals so that I can re-grease them with a grease gun every now and then.

What tools are you using to remove the bolt? How did you evern strip the bolt? I replaced my suspension with b&gs and didn't run into this problem.

Used a hammer to hammer out the tie rod. I'd recommend using the tie rod remover tool. Its much better and works faster. As for the tie rod I fixed it...the first few threads where messed up and bent soo I just dremeled them off.

I destroyed the boot on mine trying to get it disconnected from the strut. Thankfully, the local dealers are all open till midnight. $40 later, i had the part, and 45 minutes of agony later, it was installed. Getting the tie rod end off after a few salty winters is just about the most awful thing ever. Good luck.
