Hey guys

I have a 2001 civic sedan and well at around 50k I got 3/4 struts replaced.
And now I am at around 100k and im hearing squeeks in my front right strut again. I went to get it checked out and Honda says they are blown but they arent under my extended warranty... grrrr

I have never had a car blow struts on me, never mind 3/4 the first time and now the replaced struts are blown again.. not impressed

on top of that i had to pay them $50 bucks for them to tell me that.
And another $25 for them to fix my gas door opener (which wasnt opening anymore)

anyways thats my rant for the day anyone else have terrible struts like me?
and any suggestions that wont break my pocket.

Tokico HP's (the blue ones) should do nicely as a replacement to OEM... not all that pricy either. Should run around $400 for a set.

i heard from a personal mechanic that KYBs favor the OEM replacements over tokico/koni/etc? iuno if thats true or not. but tokico blues are a very good choice and even better if you plan to drop. but stock springs will do just fine with aftermarket shocks. the cheapest i've seen the tokico blues were around the $300-350 range at sites like

My stock struts (at least the rears) started leaking at around 45K. I'll be putting on KYB AGX and H&R springs in the next few weeks.

Probably a personal Preference... as I've been advised to avoid KYB in favor of Tokico and Koni (Koni over Tokico)... but then this is dealing with performance handling where all of the dampers would be adjustible (KYB AGX, Tokico Illumina, Koni Sport) for non performance dampers... I'd say just about any thing is better then stock.

I would say Tokico too over KYB. For non performance, I would choose Tokico too over KYB. KYB shocks just doesn't last as long as Tokico. I've had & seen so many bad experiences with KYB. Of course in my opinion, Koni still make the best shocks.

The Konis are definitely the best. If you are looking for a stock replacement (or the most affordable), go with the Tokicos. Check us out.

I'm glad to see eveyone favors the konis becuase thats what I've been salivating over for the last while. I'm currently lowered on stock struts with aftermarket springs, but I've not had any problems since 3 months into my 02. just luck I suppose?

Only problem with Koni is the fact that the fronts are inserts and require a bit of work to install. Other than that they are the best option for aftermarket shock absorbers.

^thats the big falldown to me IMO. why did koni decide to make them inserts on the fronts? did they cheap out or some? =| seems like they only spent quality time to build the rears. the performance is superior hands down, but craftsmanship isnt just their.

I think you'd be supprised how common Insert type shocks are for Strut type suspensions... just about all shock MFG's make some types of INsterts for struts. From Bilstein to Tokico, all of them make inserts for Struts. and why did Koni make inserts for our application... Simply be cause it was not cost effective to retool one of their assembly lines to build "special" struts for our cars, if you have seen other Strut type suspensions, you'd notice that the steering rack isn't tied directly in to the strut. SO its really Honda that screwed us, not Koni. They are just trying to make the best out of a bad design. The rears arnt inserts simply because shocks for a "double wish bone" suspension are very simple. Just a top hat and an eyelet have to be welded to a shock of proper length...simple.
