noise coming from rear suspension

Hi, I have a new '05 LX (1,500 miles) and I am noticing a noise from the right rear when going over bumps. The other side doesn't do it. I can drive down the road driving over manhole covers (or any other bumps) with the right side tires and I can hear this "clunk-clunk" or "rattling" coming from the rear suspension when it hits the bump(s). I do the same with the left side tires and I don't hear anything. To me it sounds like a bad strut or strut mount on the right rear. This is my first Civic (Honda for that matter) and just wanted to see what your opinions are. I thought maybe a loose wheel bearing but I checked that and it was fine. I plan on taking it in under warrantee but might wait till it gets worse so they don't give me the ole' "that's normal" ploy.

thanks
Paul

take er back to honda and have them take a look. The struts on the 7thgens are pretty weak but i'd be surprised if your's blew already.

I am thinking more like a bad strut/strut mount from the factory...?

i had that too when i got my car. the sound came from the front right side. like you, i decided to wait (until i got to 3000 something miles). i brought it to the dealership, and all they said was "its normal".

btw, the sound is gone now.

hmm, for some reason that doesn't surprise me. That phrase seems to be every dealers favorite saying.

How long did it take to go away? I will probably take it anyway to see what they say.

I brought it to the dealer and had one of the techs with me.....of course I couldn't find a road around the area to get it to make the noise. Then all the way back it was fine. It snowed a few inches last night so that made finding abrubt bumps difficult from the snow filling in the cracks I don't think it's a big deal though, as I drove over all that crunchy, frozen and bumpy ice/snow and I couldn't hear anything. I'm sure it will show back up...I will just have to wait for it to get worse and then bring it back in, as I have 100,000 miles to wait..lol

UPDATE:

it seems to only do it when the car is cold (been under 30 degrees here). I drove it 30minutes to the where the dealer is to try to find a road that I can get it to make the noise on so when I have them with me next time I know where to go. I get there and drive around the whole area for 1.5 hours and could not get it to make the noise. Even found some bumpy streets and it didn't make a peep...the car seemed VERY solid. I them drive it back home and drive down the same streets that I do in the morning when it DOES make the noise and it was still quiet. I then drove it to work this morning and it did make the noise again. Whatever it is it seems like it is temperature dependant and REALLY quiets down after driving it awhile.

I am totally stumped..

I think its cause your car could be cold..

My car has this tendency to make this loud click/popping noise when I press the brakes and its cold...I figure its some metal that brushing against something else...

Of course..when I took my car to the dealership, they told me my brake pads needed lubrication...The first block I drive down (around the corner from the dealer) and stop for a stop sign..POP.... They never fix anything.

Or you can do what I did...spend a day at autocross to really brake that sucker in...Im at 5700 miles on my car, Haven't heard a squeak or a click from it since November...which was Auto X

no, I don't have ABS

it's just there when I go slow over abrubt cracks in the pavement. It sounds just like a loose wheel bearing would sound going over bumps. I am going to have to take it in eventually. The car will have to sit overnight by the dealer though so it will do it in the morning when I take them for a test drive.

that's good to hear..well, maybe not for you...lol, but at least somebody else has this problem. It has been getting down to 10-15 degrees F here at night and now it seems like both of the rears are making the noise....but the right is still louder than the left. It's almost like the rubber bushings are cold and stiff or something which causes things to slightly move around in them, causing the noise. It goes away after awhile because the rubber gets more pliable from the constant movement...who knows, it was just a guess. I will be taking it in soon, so I will keep you posted.

how cold is it up by you?

well the noise occurs probably anywhere from -5 to -10 celcius and below i think...........i was -15ish last night at it was making the noise, its more appearnt now because there is snow on the ground in my neighbourhood so the road is a bit rougher, so i can hear the noise alot more......keep me posted, thanks

well, it's sitting at the dealer tonight outside and I have to go there in the morning to test drive it with a service guy. I should know something by tomorrow night. I will keep you posted.

well, they said they took care of it by basically doing what some here refer to as the rear deck noise. They just added some foam tape and stuff to the rear deck and to c pillar. Didn't do a damn thing
It is pretty cold out now and it seems like both sides are making the noise. I will wait to see if it gets worse and I will be taking it back in. You would think that they would at least drive it after they do their "fix" to see if they actually fixed the problem or not. O well, shame on me for actually expecting a dealership to fix anything

Let me know what you find out when you bring yours in...

thanks, Paul

no, it's not really a creaking, it's more of a loose wheel bearing/loose suspension part sound.....a hollow "rattling" sound when going slow over abrupt bumps.

hmmmmmmm..........since your car is the 2005 I don't think it should be the struts. and the noise is coming from the right rear. You don't here and banging for anything? I had put on an aftermarket antiroll bar backwards and ti was hitting the exhaust and control arms over bumps.

I guess Honda will fix it its brand new, did they give you an update on your car?
