Rear brake conversion
Well guys i have now started my rear drum to disc conversion using the 03SI platform for parts. IM installing the AEM rear disc kit instead of using the OEM rotors. I have started gaterhing the pieces and will keep all interested parties updated. Mad props to Greg @ hondawerx for the help in prices and pieces and the tech support for this thing. I called up AEM before i started getting prices and asked about plans for their own rear drum to disc conversion and they have nothing in R&D and do not plan to in the future so for all those wishing to get this conversion we are on our own.
Have you figured out what to do about the brake proportioning valve? I understand all of the Si's brake components will fit, but the Si uses Electronic Brake Distribution, so that part is out.
Maybe the Acura EL's from Canada?

Kepp us all updated!
I am doing the RSX swap this month, and i could go with the RSX brakes in the rear, but i want to keep the 4lug...sleeper style you know? And plus i love my rims too much to get new ones.
So let us know how things are going, take lots of pics.
How much for all the parts that your ordered?
Good Luck!

$600 US, thats it?
WOW! Thats really good!
Make sure to make a very specific list of all the parts that you had to use to get the swap done. I am very interested.
I just helped my buddy put BREMBOS on his Prelude, and they look awsome, i want big discs in all corners bad now!

Scenario: I go digging in a junkyard to find a totalled 1.7EL (I live in canada).
will the master cylinder be different? do you guys know if the EL uses EBD?
or can I just thief the neccessary parts off the back of it?

are you just getting the rear AEM discs...or does your price include big front discs as well? And if it doesnt include the front...dont you think it might look kind of sily to have slotted rear discs, but not front? Or do you already have fronts?

. The master cylinder has a different brake force distributor. I think you also need the ABS pump from the EL as well, if you have ABS on your car (I do on mine). So you gotta scavange yhe front, under hood stuff, and the rear as well. Ask me about your mom.

ZMan2K2: a ha!
what model do you have? Si/EX, or DX/LX?
hrm...good thing I talked to someone about this...the honda guy had no clue what is under the EL's hood.
ok, so it has a different brake force distributor...but does it have the electronic brake distribution technology? that's in the EL's computer, which I can't thief...
either way, I'll be on the lookout for people who have smashed them here
I'll let you know if/when I find one, and if there's two, I might buy the parts from both.

From research so far, the EL does not use Electronic Brake Distribution. The problem with adding disc to an Ex or other model is that right now, about 1200 psi is directed at the fronts and only 800 psi is directed towards the rear. So the rears will not get enough pressure to properly activate them. In other words, the brake bias will be heavily towards the front.
The Si's system is out. The brake parts are pretty easy to install but the best source for a new brake proportional valve (located near the firewall underneath the master cylinder) appears to be the Acura EL. After all it shares the same body as the rest of the Civics, so the routing of its brake lines should be similar.
We may or may not need the a new master cylinder and brake booster. The ABS system is the same, it uses the same part numbers for the sensors, and it measures speed of the wheel, not pressure. When it detects a lower speed in one of the wheels, indicating a lock up, then it modulates the pressure.
If you need the brake booster and master cylinder, the project just went way up.

I heard that you definately need the master cylinder and the brake booster. Talked to an acura guy today.
that's all I asked him...I should have asked him more!
somebody should get a parts list together, for all the parts needed to do the swap.
if I get some time, I'll try to do it.
Its a celebration bitches!

i want to do the rear brake conversion but the 5 lug from a rsx.... humm, i think im going to go to a aution and buy a totaled rsx s... probly wont cost me more than 5, if im lucky i could get one for less... hehe, their going to be like why do you want a car that messed up... then they will see my civic and say oooooo....
blah... im bored

Here is the latest update on rear disk brakes. If you want to keep it four lug, you will need the rear brake assemblies from the knuckle out. This includes, the knuckles, bearings, brake hoses, parking brake cable, disks, and calipers.
All the parts should just bolt up. The Civic Ex manual tells how to remove, use the Si manual to install (and peform maintenance). After this, you will have Si rear brakes, so you will have no problem finding pads or replacement rotors.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I've been doing the research that "rickinthescv" was doing as well, he was just faster than me
. Basically, we need to get a booster, BFD and stuff from the rear knuckles out for the swap. Parts costs for this stuff is around $1200 CAN.
So yeah, I'm waiting for a dead EL in the junkyard to scavange stuff off of. Some of the yards around here have a "$50 for all you can carry in a wheelbarrow" days, so, I keep watching, waiting, and searching, with no luck yet. But it will happen, the way people drive around here, it's only a matter of time.
tekgnosis: I have an LX sedan.

so when i go to upgrade my 4 discs then, i will have to find upgraded brakes and calipers for the EX up front, then a set of discs and calipers for the Si in the rear...not sayin that im not gonna do this, cause i am...just a little bit of a pain.
How much is everything then? Knuckles out, and the Acura part...no AEM rear disc, just OE stuff.
Thanks

Actually, the Si and Ex use the same brakes in the front. If you look, the part numbers for the AEM upgrades are the same number in the front for both cars. So you basically just shop for upgrades for a 2002 Si.
On a side note, the brake sizes for the Honda family are 10.3 for the Civic, Si, and base RSX. The RSX Type S uses 11.8 discs in the front.
The Civic uses 7.8 Drums, the Si and RSX use 10.2 rear discs.

oh, and if you come across two busted up EL's, lemme know! I will pay you $300 if you get double the parts, and for shipping!!!

I've contacted a bunch of junkyards around here, but apparently they split up the load: domestic/imports...so I'm not sure where the acura's/honda's are

But...if I can find a yard that has some, I'll let you know, too!
