16" OR 17"

Ok Ive been searching the whole site for days but Im still not sure if I should get 16's or 17's I was leaning towards 16's because my car (02 lx black coupe) is already really slow and I heard 17's will make it even slower? Is there really that much difference in preformance between a 16 and 17? and what do you guys think konig rated R's or enkie rs6???? thanx in advance

If you were to put a stock tire next to a 17" there isn a seriosly drastic change.
16" just give you more cushion for the rim than 17"
If you go to a 45 series tire than it is a tad bigger.
17" better grip
16" more cushion and rim insurance.

I like 17"

You can use the tire calculator on the menu bar when it is back up and running to compare.

It wasn't working on 4/6/2003 I reported the issue to the webmaster.

Id say im goin for a bit of both, its just that my lx is already slow to begin with and I dont wanna make it any slower than it already is! Just curious if the 17s will give me a noticeable loss in performance?

try my 15's 205/50R15 they are just my race tire but by being 5.7% smaller they give a noticable boost in acceleration, but I do lose some top end. But top speed dosn't mean any thing when you'r autocrossing. Plus having a super sticky tire, I now launch at 4500Rpm's rather then 3200 with no tire spin. On the street I have a set of 205/40ZR17's and I can definily tell the difference between the two. the 17's are much Heavier ,and make the car Less responsive to throttle imputs.

I have 215/40/17 and I haven't really noticed a power loss. Another thing to look for is the weight of the rim. You should try and get one less than 20 lbs or you'll have power loss.

If you don't want to slow down your car, get 16s. 16 is the compromise between show and go. On a Honda, there is no better choice than a 15 inch rim. For performance i.e.: 15X7.

If you want 17s to make that compromise, get forged 17s instead of the traditional caster ones. They are NOT cheap + there are not a wide variety of forged 17 inch wheels out. If you can afford them and like bigger wheels then get 17s. Plus you can run bigger brakes front and back.

Yeah I have 17" with 215/45 I noticed a little less pick up and go and lower gas mileage but besides that it feels the wheel gap and looks good. I am even wanting some 18" rims but I would lose my ace on selling and buying new ones. So I say 17" and if you have a EX definately stick with 215/45 don't want to add mileage.

So then the 205/40/17 would just be a bumpier ride? I mean im from NYC and there are potholes big enough that you can get trapped in, lol. So if I get a 205/40/17 would it be more susceptible to damage and it would be a bumpier ride. Is that all?

I have Kumho 215/40/17, and the ride is very smooth. It depend on the tire for smoothness. You will have a little more protection with the 45's, but I also live in pothole city and I haven't had any problems.*knock on wood*. I would also get the 215 instead of the 205's because they are wider and you'll have better handling.

But if i did get a 205/40/17, it wouldnt be terrible or anything would it? You aslo said it depends on tires for smoothness? I have a choice of kuhmo, toyo FZ4, Hankook Ventus, and Champiro Tires, which do yall recommend? No real major problems if i did go with 205/40/17 right? Also, I appreciate all the help every1 is giving me.

205-40-17 has got to be the crappiest sizes, IMO. The profile sucks for areas with bad roads and you're not taking advantage of the width of the rim with a 205.

Oh, and let me add, the closer the tire is to the wheel... or the less tire you have, the more road noise you pick up. 205-40s are loud, but with 215-45, if you find the right tire, you can have some peace.

17"s suck! I went from 14" stock ones to 17" and I saw great loss in power. And you know how slow our cars are to begin with. Plus 17" tires are too skinny and makes driving more scary (ie pot holes) Go with the 16", although I personally would go with the 15"

You should've invested in forged rims.

215-45 = comfort size. Any profile smaller than a 45 will cause road noise.

How does the answer change if you have an EX? 16's or 17's. I really like the look of 17's but don't want to slow down my 0-60, well 0-80 really.

that's almost what I did for autocrossing. But I wen with 15's and a short tire.

any time you increace the unsprung weight of a car you will slow it down.
How much is dependnt on the tourque of the engine (How much power it has to get things to start spinning.) the lower the tourque the more unspung weight will affect it, for better or worse. so with our cars you want that as light as you can get, so the engine can concentrate more on making the car go faster rather then countering the enertia of the unsrpung weight.

unsprung weight is any thing not held up by the springs, such as wheels/tires, Rotors, calipers, ect...

What up everyone. I'm from Brooklyn, and like JayFreazy said, potholes are a bi*** in dis city. I noticed that u guys said that 215/45 are good tires for the bad roads, but are 17 inch rims good enough to survive the ride? I also want to know if I'm gonna have a huge problem with lumps in my tires created by the potholes?

wait...tell me you are joking. why would you even think of getting a tire like a cheater which have big sidewalls when you dont drag? for autocrossing ive been told low profile tires.

If you're so concerned about power loss, stick with 15s or put in more money to buy some lightweight 16s.

If you don't like potholes, there's no better size than 215-45-17. If you want to see how that tire looks on a wheel, look at a stock IS 300.
