I had my tires balanced and mounted yesterday. I got on the highway and noticed a vibration in the steering wheel. I figured they weren't balanced properly. I brought it back to the place and they told me that one of my front wheels threw a weight. They rebalanced them and I got back on the highway and still a shake. I went back and told them about it. They told me they didn't think my tires were out of round. They said I am going to need a full 4-wheel alignment.
Does that sound right? I thought vibrations weren't caused by alignment. And is it possible that my alignment could get that screwed up due to just installing wheels? I don't want to spend any money I don't have to. Should I go back there or just go somewhere else and get their opinion on the balancing and ****?
Thanks
Alex

did you get hub rings? i would get those first.. the person you got the wheels from should be able to provide you with them(after all you did spend $1000 or so..)
ya wheel alignment can cause steering wheel vibrations BUT most of the time it doesnt..
its either the hub rings or just a badd balancing job. i got mine balanced 3 times at the first place it was still shaking, i asked them for money to take it somewhere else. took it to america's tires and they got it right the first try... when the first place was doing it, i looked and the machine did say it was balanced right but it turns out they were putting them on the wrong place on the wheel. they put them on the far inside of the wheel rather then right behind the face

Interesting that you said that they were putting them in the far inside and not behind the face. I felt behind the tires last night and the weights were in the far inside. I didn't think anything of it because I thought that was normal.
Anyway, I had my mechanic do the work because they have done a good job with anything I've brought them over the years. I'm thinking about just bring it to a place that deals solely with tires and wheels. But if that is true about the far inside versus the face, then that might be the problem. Thanks a lot though.

It ended up being the balancing. The kid who originally did it, put the weights on the inner rim. I went back and talked to this guy I know there and he also said that they had to be behind the face. They ordered the tape weights and did it. It's all good now.
So... VNlilMAN, you were right on with that one. Thanks.

They might have done a static balance instead of a dynamic balace. On custom wheels it's always good to balance with tape weights on both sides of the rim. Some places sometimes don't do it because it's a lil difficult to get them right on the spot but I know for sure, no matter what, ATC (America's Tire Co.)will always do it right. Besides it's a lifetime guaranteed computer spin balance.
